High temperatures can prevent oxidation from damaging the MoSi2 Heating Element. This is caused by a protective coating of quartz glass (SiO2) that has formed on the surface and is both thin and sticky. SiO2, a protective layer whose melting point is 1710℃, melted when the element temperature above 1700 ℃. However, due to surface tension, the protective layer fused into worthless droplets. The protective SiO2 layer is spontaneously regenerated, nevertheless, when elements continue to operate in oxidizing environments.

Warning: Molybdenum disilicide heating elements should not be used for an extended period of time in the 400–700℃ range since this will cause intense low-temperature oxidation, which will result in the element becoming powdered.
