Are there any simple instruments for testing the purity of magnesium oxide

No, there are no low-tech tools that can fully take the place of expert testing. For first screening, however, portable densitometers, moisture metres, and X-ray defect detectors can be employed. The MgO concentration and trace contaminants cannot be precisely determined by these equipment, but they can promptly identify clear abnormalities on-site. Testing by a third-party CNAS-accredited organisation is still necessary for final validation.

1. A portable densitometer that helps determine the quality of the filling

The goal is to quickly determine the loose density of magnesium oxide powder, which indirectly indicates particle homogeneity and purity;

2.8–3.2 g/cm³ is the acceptable range;

Anomaly Warning: High impurities, moisture absorption, or big particle size resulting in high porosity can all contribute to low density.

Limitations: Only for process reference; unable to determine chemical makeup.

The Hall effect flow metre with density measurement device is the recommended model; it is easy to use and appropriate for on-site applications.

2. Moisture Analyser (used to measure moisture content)

The goal is to use the thermal weight loss method to calculate the loss on ignition of powder in order to provide an initial evaluation of moisture absorption or the presence of volatiles;

Acceptance Standard: < 5% (in accordance with HG/T 3928-2012);

Risk Warning: Increased weight loss may also result from high CaO or Cl⁻ levels; a thorough evaluation utilising other techniques is required.

This approach is limited to process control and is unable to differentiate between moisture and impurity breakdown.

3. A portable X-ray flaw detector for screening for structural flaws

The goal is to identify structural issues in filled tubes, such as voids, off-center cores, and uneven densities;

Resolution Requirement: ≥ 5μm, sufficient to detect anomalies at the micron level;

Benefits: Non-destructive testing that allows for thorough reworkpiece inspection;

Limitations: Needs component analysis; cannot accurately represent chemical purity.

To increase testing efficiency, it is advised for initial quality screening in production areas.
