Basic principles for selecting drying equipment

Abstract:

Each type of drying equipment has its specific applicable scope, and for each material, several drying equipment options can be found that meet the basic requirements; however, only one is truly suitable. Improper selection not only incurs unnecessary high one-time purchase costs but also incurs heavy costs throughout the entire service life, such as low efficiency, high energy consumption, high operating costs, poor product quality, or even the equipment failing to operate normally.

The following are general principles for selecting drying equipment. It's difficult to say which one or more aspects are most important; ideal selection must prioritize based on individual conditions, and sometimes compromise is necessary.

1. Applicability: The drying equipment must first be suitable for the specific material and meet the basic requirements for material drying, including effective material handling (feeding, conveying, fluidization, dispersion, heat transfer, discharge, etc.) and meeting basic requirements in terms of throughput, dehydration rate, and product quality.

2. High Drying Rate: In terms of drying rate alone, convection drying involves highly dispersed materials in hot air, resulting in a low critical moisture content and fast drying speed. Furthermore, even within convection drying, different drying methods result in different critical moisture contents and therefore different drying rates.

3. Low Energy Consumption: Different drying methods have different energy consumption indicators. Theoretically, conduction drying can achieve 100% thermal efficiency, while convection drying only reaches around 70%.

4. Cost Savings: Drying equipment performing the same function can sometimes have significantly different costs; the lower-cost option should be chosen.

5. Low Operating Costs: Operating costs such as equipment depreciation, energy consumption, labor costs, maintenance costs, and spare parts costs should be kept as low as possible.

6. Prioritize drying equipment with simple structure, ample spare parts supply, high reliability, and long service life.

7. Meet environmental protection requirements, have good working conditions, and high safety.

8. Before selection, it is best to conduct drying experiments on the material and thoroughly understand the advantages and disadvantages of drying equipment already used for similar materials. This often helps in making an appropriate selection.

9. Do not rely entirely on past experience; pay attention to absorbing new technologies and listen to other people's opinions.
