Does a silicon carbide rod need to be replaced if its surface turns white due to oxidation?

The main component of silicon carbide heating elements is silicon carbide, which reacts with oxygen at high temperatures to form a protective layer of silicon dioxide, appearing white or grayish-white. This natural oxide layer slows down further oxidation and is a normal phenomenon, usually not affecting heating performance. However, if the oxide layer peels off over a large area, turns black in localized areas, or is accompanied by an abnormally high resistance value, it may indicate damage to the internal structure, requiring replacement.

The core criterion for determining whether replacement is necessary is functional performance. If the silicon carbide heating element can still stably reach the set temperature and the resistance change is within 10%, the whitening due to oxidation can be left untreated; conversely, if heating efficiency decreases significantly or frequent breakage occurs, even slight surface oxidation warrants replacement. In daily use, avoiding frequent rapid heating and cooling and maintaining a stable furnace atmosphere (e.g., reducing water and oxygen content) can significantly extend the lifespan of the silicon carbide heating element.

For silicon carbide heating elements with slight whitening due to oxidation, regular cleaning of surface carbon deposits or the use of a special coating can slow down oxidation. However, if it has exceeded its recommended lifespan (usually 1-2 years), even if the appearance is intact, gradual replacement is recommended to ensure production safety. When purchasing silicon carbide rods, prioritize those with high density and mature oxidation resistance technology to reduce oxidation risks from the outset.

During long-term high-temperature use, silicon carbide rods will gradually develop a white oxide layer on their surface due to continuous exposure to an oxidizing environment. This is a typical phenomenon caused by the chemical reaction between silicon carbide and oxygen. Does this whitening indicate the need for immediate replacement? It requires a comprehensive assessment considering various factors, including the degree of oxidation, the usage environment, and performance characteristics. Specifically, if only a uniform, light-colored oxide film appears and the function is normal, it is usually a benign reaction; however, if accompanied by other abnormal signs, further testing and evaluation may be necessary.
