Explanation of Waterproof Ratings for Single-Head Heating Element: IP65/IP67 - Applicable Scenarios and Testing Standards
Leave a message
The IP protection rating (waterproof rating) of a single-ended heating element is a core indicator of its dust and water resistance. IP65 and IP67 are commonly used protection levels in industrial settings, and they differ significantly in protective performance, applicable scenarios, and testing standards.
I. IP Protection Rating Coding Rules
The IP protection rating consists of "IP" followed by two digits. The first digit represents the dustproof rating, and the second digit represents the waterproof rating:
The first digit "6": Indicates complete protection against dust ingress, representing the highest dustproof rating;
The second digit "5/7": Corresponds to different waterproof capabilities, and is the key difference between IP65 and IP67.
II. Performance, Testing Standards, and Applicable Scenarios of IP65 Waterproof Rating
1. Core Protection Performance
IP65 rated single-ended heating elements provide dustproof and water-jet protection, specifically:
Dustproof: Completely isolates external dust, preventing any dust from entering the tube body or wiring terminals;
Waterproof: Withstands low-pressure water jets (such as sprays and splashes) from any direction without affecting the normal operation and insulation performance of the heating element.
2. Testing Standards (Based on GB/T 4208-2017/IEC 60529)
Dustproof Test: Place the heating element in a dust chamber and spray it continuously for 8 hours to check for dust penetration;
Waterproof Test: Using a nozzle with an inner diameter of 6.3mm, spray water onto the heating element from any direction at a water pressure of 0.1MPa, at a distance of 2.5m~3m, for at least 3 minutes. After the test, the insulation resistance must be ≥1MΩ, with no leakage or functional abnormalities.
3. Applicable Scenarios
IP65 protection is suitable for non-immersion applications with minor splashes/sprays. Typical scenarios include: Auxiliary heating of equipment in drying workshops (e.g., oven preheating, mold preheating to avoid minor splashes during cleaning); Heating in outdoor short-term rain environments (e.g., insulation of small outdoor equipment, requiring a simple protective cover); Localized heating near industrial cleaning lines (to prevent minor splashes of cleaning fluid); Small heating modules in the home appliance industry (e.g., auxiliary heating of water heater casings, heating of oven liner).
III. Performance, Testing Standards, and Applicable Scenarios of IP67 Waterproof Rating
1. Core Protection Performance
IP67-rated single-ended heating elements provide dustproof and short-term immersion protection, exceeding the protection capabilities of IP65. Specifically:
Dustproof: Same as IP65, completely dustproof;
Waterproof: Can be briefly immersed in water at a specified depth without affecting electrical performance, and can function normally after removal.
2. Testing Standards (Based on GB/T 4208-2017/IEC 60529)
Dustproof Test: Consistent with IP65;
Waterproof Test: The heating element is completely immersed in a water tank with a depth of 1m for 30 minutes. During this time, all components of the element (including the sealing of the terminals) must be underwater. After the test, the insulation resistance should be ≥1MΩ, there should be no water ingress short circuit, and the heating function should be normal.
3. Applicable Scenarios
IP67 is suitable for working conditions that may involve short-term immersion or high humidity and large amounts of water accumulation. Typical scenarios include:
Liquid heating in water tanks/basins (e.g., heating of small liquid storage tanks, heating of constant temperature water baths for experiments);
Outdoor humid environments that may accumulate water (e.g., antifreeze heating of outdoor irrigation equipment, insulation of ship deck equipment);
Heating of industrial cooling systems (e.g., antifreeze of cooling pipes, preventing immersion due to pipe leakage);
Heating of special parts in automobiles/construction machinery (e.g., preheating modules for water accumulation areas in engine compartments).
IV. Precautions
IP rating only represents dust and water resistance; it does not include corrosion resistance, high-temperature steam resistance, etc. For use in corrosive environments, an additional anti-corrosion coating (such as PTFE coating) is required.
Terminal protection is crucial. Even if the tube body reaches IP67, the entire system will fail if the junction box protection level is insufficient. Wiring components with the same protection level are required.
IP67's "immersion" is for short-term use only; prolonged immersion is not permitted. For long-term underwater operation, a dedicated waterproof heating element with an IP68 rating must be selected.
