In recent years, resin 3D printers have become increasingly popular. This is mainly due to their ease of use and cost effectiveness. Unlike other powder material 3D printers, resin printers are relatively inexpensive in terms of initial, continuous, and overall maintenance costs.
They are mainly used for making small and medium-sized items at home and in office space. Although resin 3D printers are popular, most people don't know how they work. Therefore, they often purchase machines and encounter difficulties in using them. The following article describes the working principle of resin 3D printing.
1、 Resin 3D printing technology
The resin is suitable for various 3D printer technologies. The main difference lies in the luminosity, but the storage and distribution of resins during the printing process are also different. Barrel polymerization is one of the resin 3D printing technologies, where liquid photosensitive polymers stay in the barrel rather than being injected through a nozzle.
Another printing technology is called material jetting technology. Unlike the former, this technology cures ultraviolet light while spraying resin droplets onto the construction surface. This is a more accurate and faster resin 3D printing technology.
2、 Working principle of resin 3D printing
Resin 3D printers have multiple components, but the basic components include resin barrels, FEP films, building boards, UV liquid crystal screens, UV display units, acrylic covers, linear guides, and the main types of resin 3D printers include stereo lithography and liquid crystal displays.
3、 Types of resin 3D printing
1. Stereolithography
SLA resin 3D printers work by applying UV laser light to the surface of photosensitive polymer containers, called resin barrels. It uses a specific pattern of light to form the desired shape. Printers include construction platforms, light sources, resin barrels, elevators, and galvanometers.
Lifts are used to increase or decrease the height of a building platform to form a number of floors. A galvanometer is a moving mirror of a laser beam. When exposed to ultraviolet light, the uncured resin in the barrel hardens in layers, forming the desired 3D model. The printer repeats this process several times before completing the model.
2. LCD display
A liquid crystal display or masked SLA3D directly uses the LED ultraviolet light beam emitted by the printer's LCD screen. This technology makes 3D printing relatively easy due to the relatively cheap additional components. The light emitted by the LCD screen can damage the organic compounds of the machine, and therefore requires frequent replacement. Resin 3D printing is relatively simple, with few moving parts. So they are generally more affordable than other types of 3D printers.
