How to check whether the electric heating cable is operating normally? Can a multimeter be used to check it?

Electric heating cables undergo rigorous factory testing to ensure their quality. However, during transportation and installation, negligence or improper installation can damage the cables, leading to improper operation of the heating system. Therefore, they must be tested upon receipt and after installation. Some users have asked if they can be tested with a multimeter. Of course, they can. Below is a brief introduction to how to do this, which we hope will be helpful.

Testing electric heating cables with a multimeter primarily measures the cable's resistance. This can detect damage, as well as short circuits and leakage in the wiring, terminal wires, and cable-to-cable connections. Testing electric heating cables with a multimeter involves the following steps:

1. Preliminary Test: As mentioned above, this is performed before installing the cables.

2. Acceptance Test: This is performed after the cables and accessories are installed and before insulation is installed.

3. Pre-Power-On Test: This test is performed after insulation is installed and before the system is powered on. During actual measurement, a low voltage of DC500 V and a high voltage of DC1000 V should be used for testing. Regardless of the length of the system, the insulation resistance of each heating circuit must be at least 10 Mohm.

1. Heating cables with protective braids and jackets: Measure between each heating cable conductor and the protective braid, and also between the protective braid and the grounding pipe.

2. Heating cables without braided jackets: Measure between each power conductor of the heating cable and the grounding pipe or thermally insulated grounding steel jacket.

Notes:

1. When measuring insulation resistance, read from right to left, with the right side being 0 and the left side being ∞.

2. The further the insulation resistance value is to the left (∞), the stronger the insulation is, and the further it is to the right (0), the worse the insulation is. (The higher the insulation resistance value is) The unit is MΩ.

3. The end of the heating cable should be sealed without any damage to the outer skin. Water is strictly prohibited after it is cut off. The above is a brief introduction to the detection of electric heating cables. If you have any questions during use or detection, you can consult us at any time. Do not solve them by yourself to avoid malfunctions and inability to use.
