How to choose heating elements for beauty devices? Why are PET heating elements a better solution?

The heating element is perhaps the most easily overlooked yet most impactful component in determining the usability of a beauty device.
Having worked in the heating element industry for over a decade, I've seen countless beauty device manufacturers fall into the same trap: beautiful appearance, packed with features, yet users only use it twice before leaving it gathering dust. When asked why, nine times out of ten, the problem lies in the "warmth" – fluctuating temperature, localized overheating, and the device quickly losing its heat.
The problem isn't in the assembly, but in that thin inner heating element.
Today, from a manufacturer's perspective, let's thoroughly discuss choosing a heating element for a beauty device: What problem does it solve? What indicators should be considered when selecting one? Why are more and more manufacturers using PET heating elements?
What exactly does the heating element in a beauty device do?
The warmth experience of a beauty device directly determines whether users will repurchase.
Many people think that a heating element is simply for "heating," as long as it gets hot. But in the context of a beauty device, its role goes far beyond just heating.
In short, the heating element in a beauty device works by using surface heating to stably raise the skin's surface temperature to a specific range (usually 38℃-42℃), thereby helping to open pores, promote skincare product absorption, and improve blood circulation.
It's not about "the hotter the better," but rather "the more stable the better."
Beauty devices have several specific requirements for their heating elements that other types of products (such as hand warmers or heated seat cushions) don't need to consider:
First, it must be thin and soft.
The device's probe must conform to the contours of the face, especially around the eyes and nose. If the heating element is too thick or rigid, it won't adhere properly, and the heat won't reach the skin.
Second, the temperature must be uniform.
Surface heating and spot heating are completely different. If the temperature distribution of the heating element is uneven, some points may become overheated, resulting in a poor experience or even a risk of burns. Facial skin is more sensitive than other parts of the body, making this issue particularly critical.
Third, safety must be ensured.
Beauty devices are products that come into direct contact with the skin; insulation, temperature resistance, and the absence of open flame risk are all crucial and cannot be compromised. Without safety certification, a product simply cannot be marketed.
Fourth, cost must be controllable.
The beauty device industry is highly competitive, and BOM costs are extremely tight. Although the heating element is just one component, in large quantities, a difference of a few cents per element can significantly impact the overall cost.

When choosing a heating element, don't just look at whether it "heats,"
consider these 4 variables
Many manufacturers place orders for heating elements based solely on "temperature and price." This is like buying a car based only on "performance and price"-performance is one thing, stability and safety are another.
Based on 16 years of industry experience, when choosing a heating element for a beauty device, the real key factors to consider are these 4 variables:
When choosing a heating element, always examine the manufacturer's quality control and testing capabilities.
Variable 1: Temperature Uniformity
This is the most critical indicator for a beauty device.
Why? Because facial skin is very sensitive to temperature. If the probe reaches 42℃ in the center but only 36℃ at the edges, the user will experience "burning heat in the center but no sensation at the edges," resulting in a poor experience. More seriously, if the local temperature exceeds 45℃, there is a risk of low-temperature burns.
Variable Two: Safety
Beauty devices are products that come into prolonged contact with the skin, so safety is paramount.
Three aspects need to be considered: insulation performance (whether there will be electrical leakage), temperature resistance range (whether it will deform or malfunction after prolonged use), and the risk of open flame (whether it will catch fire under short circuit or abnormal conditions).
Reputable manufacturers' heating elements undergo insulation lamination treatment and pass relevant safety certifications. Always check the test reports when choosing a device, and don't rely solely on verbal promises from salespeople.
Variable Three: Thickness and Flexibility
The space for a beauty device probe is very limited. The thinner the heating element, the more space is available for structural design.
More importantly, flexibility is crucial. The face is not flat; it has curves. If the heating element is not flexible enough, it cannot conform well to the skin, and heat cannot be transferred, rendering the heating ineffective.
Variable Four: Cost and Mass Production Stability
It's not about the cheapest being the best, but rather "the lower the cost, the better, while meeting performance requirements." Choosing an unstable heating element to save a few cents will lead to high return and repair rates, resulting in significant financial losses later.
Mass production stability is also crucial. Performance may be excellent in small-batch trials, but yield rates and consistency will suffer in mass production.
III
PET Heating Elements
Why are more and more beauty device manufacturers using them?
PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is a high-molecular-weight film material. Heating elements made with PET as the substrate are called PET heating elements. In recent years, more and more beauty device manufacturers have replaced their original PI heating elements or traditional heating wires with PET, and there are reasons for this.
01
Ultra-thin, perfectly conforming to facial curves
The thickness of PET heating elements is typically below 0.1mm, with the thinnest reaching 0.05mm. What does that mean? Thinner than a sheet of A4 paper.
Furthermore, PET film itself is highly flexible, allowing for easy bending, folding, and shaping. When placed inside the beauty device probe, it perfectly conforms to the curves of the face, ensuring close contact with the skin on the forehead, cheeks, and around the eyes, resulting in even heat distribution.
02
Surface Heating, Excellent Temperature Uniformity
The PET heating element utilizes surface heating technology, generating heat evenly across the entire heating surface, unlike heating wires where only the wires generate heat.
With a well-designed circuitry, the temperature difference of the PET heating element can be controlled within ±1℃ to ±2℃, providing users with a warm, comfortable, and even heating experience, rather than uneven heat distribution.
03
Safe and Reliable, Excellent Insulation
PET film itself is an excellent insulating material with high dielectric strength, making it resistant to breakdown.
The PET heating element undergoes multi-layer insulation lamination during production, preventing leakage under normal use. Moreover, PET material is flameless and non-self-igniting, eliminating the risk of open flame like some other materials in case of abnormal conditions.
04
High Cost-Effectiveness and Stable Mass Production
While PI (polyimide) heating elements offer superior high-temperature resistance (above 200℃), they are significantly more expensive than PET heating elements. However, the operating temperature of beauty devices is typically between 38℃ and 45℃, rarely exceeding 60℃, making PI's high-temperature resistance unnecessary.
Using PI heating elements in beauty devices is like using a sports car for cargo – excessive performance and a waste of money.
PET heating elements, while meeting all the performance requirements of beauty devices, are 30%-50% cheaper than PI. Furthermore, the PET material supply chain is mature, and mass production stability is high, ensuring consistent yield rates for large-scale supply.
05
Highly Customizable
Beauty device probes come in a wide variety of shapes, including round, oval, and irregular shapes, and vary in size.
PET heating elements can be customized to any shape, size, voltage, and heating temperature according to customer needs. Unrestricted by voltage and temperature, it can be used for everything from tiny eye massagers the size of a fingernail to large facial beauty devices the size of a palm.
Furthermore, PET heating elements can be pre-installed with wiring and temperature control probe locations, facilitating assembly and reducing subsequent processing steps.

PET vs. PI vs. Traditional Heating Wires:
How to Choose a Beauty Device?
There are three main types of heating elements commonly found on the market: PET heating elements, PI heating elements, and traditional heating wires.
Many manufacturers struggle with which to choose. The core issue boils down to one sentence: consider your product's operating temperature and usage scenario.
If your beauty device operates below 80℃ (as is the case for most beauty devices), a PET heating element is the optimal choice. It strikes the best balance between thinness, flexibility, uniform temperature, safety, and cost.
If your product requires high temperatures (such as some medical-grade thermotherapy equipment with operating temperatures exceeding 100℃), then a PI heating element is more suitable. However, this is rare in consumer-grade beauty devices.
Traditional heating wires and silicone heating pads are not recommended for beauty devices unless your product has absolutely no requirements regarding thickness and flexibility (such as large-scale enclosures). They are thick, rigid, and produce uneven temperatures, resulting in a poor user experience.
PET heating pads aren't some groundbreaking technology, but in the context of beauty devices, they are currently the best overall choice. They are thin, soft, provide uniform temperature, are safe, and offer excellent value-they have everything you need without incurring unnecessary expenses.
If you are developing beauty device products or struggling to choose a heating pad, consider trying PET heating pads. Test samples and compare temperature uniformity and fit; you'll be able to make your own judgment.
