How To Determine If Color-Changing Silica Gel Is Still Usable
Leave a message
The main points to judge if the color-changing silica gel still can be used are the colour can be recovered, the physical state is complete, and the adsorption function is normal. It can be utilised after heating even if it changes colour, as long as it is not aged or polluted.
1. Colour State: The primary indicator of usability
Still usable: When it fails, it is pink/red (blue silica gel) or dark green (orange silica gel), but can be returned to deep blue or bright orange by heating; The colour shift is uniform, without odd colour areas such as grayish-white, dark red or brown.
Reversible colour = effective indicator = reusable.
Not available: colour cannot be restored after heating; gray-white, intense red or local black, uneven colour or oil stains are signs of ageing or pollution.
2. Physical condition: Checking for structural damage
State/Province
Summary Description
Intact, un-clumped, loose grains
Usable Microporous structure remained good moisture absorption capability.
Small breaks or small cracks
Use with care Can be utilised temporarily in non-critical situations (ie. toolboxes)
Heavily powdered, clumped, softened or sticky
Unusable Micropores Collapse or Contaminate, Adsorption Function Lost
If the particles are easily crumbled into powder by squeezing, it shows over regeneration or incorrect heating, and the moisture-proof function is not stable.
3. Functional Test : Verification of real adsorption capacity
(1) Test of Heating Regeneration
Operation: Heat in oven at 100-120℃ for 1-2 hrs;
Decision:
Completely becomes blue/orange - Usable;
No change or partial recovery → Not effective. (2) Environmental exposure experiment
Procedure: Put the regenerated and cooled silica gel in a closed humid environment (for example, a food storage box with a moist towel) for 24 h;
Decision.
Then shift from blue to pink gradually → Moisture absorption function is normal, can be used;
No colour change, fast complete change → Non-responsive, unreliable.
Special reminder: For the precision protection of cameras, hearing aids, medicines etc., if there is any uncertainty, it is recommended to replace it directly to ensure safety.
4. Reference of Usage History
Regeneration times >= 5 times : Performance degradation (significant), More testing needed;
More than 1 year of use: Micropore deterioration may occur owing to natural ageing even if the appearance is normal;
Contact with oil, chemicals or temperatures above 120 °C: Irreversible damage expected.
Practical tip: Create a "regeneration log" and write the number of regenerations and the date directly on the package, so you can easily keep track of the state.
