PTFE-heating tubes are composite devices for rigorous industrial service. The exterior sheath is made of pure PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), a high performance fluoropolymer valued for its chemical inertness and thermal stability. Inside there is a resistance wire of nickel-chromium which produces heat and is surrounded by compressed magnesium oxide (MgO) powder for electrical insulation and heat conduction. The electrical connections are made with metal terminal pins-typically stainless steel or copper alloys. None of these compounds alone is acutely dangerous under typical conditions.
