How to judge the quality of thermocouples? The correct selection method of thermocouples

1. How to judge whether a thermocouple is good or bad
Thermocouples are the core components of industrial temperature measurement, and their performance directly affects the operating efficiency and safety of the equipment. The following are 5 major detection steps to determine whether the thermocouple is normal:

1. Resistance measurement method
Operation steps:
Use a multimeter to measure the resistance value at both ends of the thermocouple.

Normal range:

K-type thermocouple: about 2-5Ω (at room temperature).

J-type thermocouple: about 10-15Ω.

Abnormal judgment:

Infinite resistance: Thermocouple internal circuit is broken.

Resistance close to 0Ω: short circuit or insulation layer damage.

2. Appearance inspection
Key inspection points:

Sheath integrity: Check for cracks, corrosion or deformation (especially in acidic/high temperature environments).

Lead connection: Confirm that the terminal is not oxidized or loose.

Traces of pollution: Oil stains and carbon deposits may cause temperature measurement errors.

3. Temperature comparison test
Operation steps:
Place the thermocouple and a high-precision thermometer with known accuracy (such as a standard platinum resistance) in a constant temperature environment (such as an oil bath, a constant temperature furnace) at the same time.

Allowable deviation:

Industrial-grade thermocouple: ±1.5°C (within the range of 0-400°C).

If the deviation exceeds ±5°C, it needs to be replaced or calibrated.

4. Signal stability test
Detection method:
Connect to a temperature transmitter or PLC to observe whether the output signal is stable.

Common problems:

Signal fluctuation: aging of the sheath insulation, electromagnetic interference.

Signal drift: deterioration of the thermocouple material (such as oxidation).

5. Insulation performance test
Operation steps:
Use a megohmmeter (500V range) to measure the insulation resistance between the thermocouple lead and the sheath.

Qualification standard:

At room temperature: ≥100MΩ.

At high temperature (such as 300°C): ≥1MΩ.

Consequences of insulation failure: signal interference, equipment leakage.

2. Thermocouple selection method
The correct selection can extend the service life and improve the temperature measurement accuracy, and requires a comprehensive consideration of 6 core factors:

1. Temperature range matching
Applicable temperatures of different thermocouple types:

Type Temperature range (°C) Typical application scenarios
K type -200~1300 Boilers, furnaces, extruders
J type 0~750 Injection molding machines, food processing
T type -200~350 Low temperature laboratory equipment
S type 0~1600 High temperature kiln, metal smelting
2. Environmental adaptability
Corrosive environment:
Choose titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) or Hastelloy (Hastelloy C276) sheath.

High pressure/vibration environment:
Choose armored thermocouple (metal sheath + magnesium oxide insulation), the compressive strength can reach 500Bar.

3. Response speed requirements
Relationship between sheath diameter and response time:

Sheath diameter (mm) Response time (seconds)
1.5 <3
3.0 5-10
6.0 15-30
Fast response scenarios: plastic extruders, semiconductor manufacturing.

4. Accuracy level
Standard level:

Class 1: ±1.5°C (0-400°C).

Class 2: ±2.5°C (0-400°C).

High-precision scenarios: Class 0.5 (±0.4°C) is required for laboratories and medical equipment.

5. Installation method
Threaded fixing: suitable for installation on the side wall of pipelines and reactors (M12×1.5 threads are common).

Flange installation: temperature measurement of tanks of high-pressure vessels (DN25/40 flange standard).

Spring compression type: tight fit requirements for dynamic equipment (such as extruder screws).

6. Cost and maintenance
Economical solution:
J-type thermocouple (iron-constantan) costs 30% less than K-type, but has a lower upper temperature limit.

Long life requirement:
Choose platinum-rhodium alloy (S-type) or ceramic sheath. Although the initial cost is 50% higher, the life can be extended by 3-5 times.

III. Selection case analysis
Case 1: PVC extruder temperature control
Requirements: fast response (<5 seconds), high temperature resistance of 300°C, and resistance to plastic corrosion.

Selection solution:

Model: K-type armored thermocouple.

Sheath: 316 stainless steel (resistant to plastic additive corrosion).

Diameter: 3mm (response time is about 8 seconds, balancing speed and strength).

Case 2: Plating tank acid heating
Requirements: resistance to 10% sulfuric acid corrosion, IP68 waterproof.

Selection solution:

Material: titanium alloy sheath.

Certification: CE/ATEX explosion-proof certification (prevent hydrogen accumulation and explosion).

4. Common problems and solutions
The measured temperature value is too low:

Possible cause: Thermocouple cold end compensation fails.

Solution: Check the compensation wire connection or replace the temperature transmitter module.

Serious signal interference:

Possible cause: Shielded cable is not used or grounding is poor.

Solution: Use twisted shielded wire instead and ensure single-point grounding.

Frequent corrosion of the sheath:

Possible cause: The material does not match the medium (such as 304 stainless steel used in hydrochloric acid environment).

Solution: Replace with tantalum (Ta) or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coated sheath.

5. Summary
The reliability of thermocouples depends on accurate selection and regular maintenance:

Judgment of good or bad: Quickly locate faults through resistance, insulation, and comparison tests.

Correct selection: Match the best solution according to parameters such as temperature, environment, and response speed.

Industrial best practice: Calibrate every 6 months and check the sheath status every 3 months in high temperature/corrosive environment.
