How to measure the quality of three thermocouple wires

1. Thermocouples
A thermocouple is a sensor that can convert temperature changes into voltage signals. It is usually composed of two different materials of wires, and the contact between these two wires is called a thermoelectric joint. By measuring the voltage difference generated by the thermoelectric joint, the temperature at which the thermocouple is located can be determined.
2. Thermocouple structure
A thermocouple consists of three wires, namely a positive wire, a negative wire, and a compensating wire. These three wires are connected to the three interfaces on the measuring instrument.
3. The function of the three wires of the thermocouple
Positive and negative wires are the main wires used for temperature measurement in thermocouples. When two wires are connected to the temperature object being measured, due to the different materials of the two wires, a thermoelectric effect is generated, that is, a voltage signal is generated. The compensating wire plays a role in offsetting the impact of external temperature changes on the measurement results.
4. How to measure the quality of thermocouples
Measuring the quality of thermocouples requires the use of a multimeter or thermocouple detector. The specific steps are as follows:
Insert the three wires of the thermocouple into the three interfaces of the detector.
Immerse the thermoelectric connector in ice water and wait for a period of time until the measurement results are stable.
Record the temperature in the ice water and the voltage value displayed by the detector.
Immerse the thermoelectric connector in hot water and wait for a period of time until the measurement results are stable.
Record the temperature in hot water and the voltage value displayed by the detector.
Calculate the sensitivity of the thermocouple based on the temperature and voltage values of ice water and hot water.
Judging the quality of a thermocouple based on its sensitivity, generally speaking, the higher the sensitivity, the better the thermocouple.
5. Application of Thermocouples
Thermocouples are widely used in temperature measurement in various industries, especially in high-temperature environments, due to their stability and reliability. For example, thermocouples are often used in temperature monitoring and control in industries such as steel, chemical, and power.
In short, the quality of a thermocouple can be judged by measuring the voltage signal it generates. The use of a thermocouple detector can facilitate measurement, calculate the sensitivity of the thermocouple based on the measured temperature and voltage values, and thus judge the quality of the thermocouple. Thermocouples have a wide range of applications in temperature measurement, especially suitable for high-temperature environments.
