How to Reactivate Color-Changing Silica Gel After Cooling
Leave a message
Color-changing silica gel doesn't need to be "reactivated" after cooling. Its drying capacity is restored after regeneration. Cooling is just to avoid secondary absorption of moisture, but does not impact its performance.
1. Cooled silica gel is already in an active state. The "activation" procedure of colour shifting silica gel involves thermal regeneration (baking at 100–120℃ for 1–2 hours). All absorbed moisture is eliminated and the microporous structure is reconstituted in the process.
The last phase in the regeneration process is cooling. The goal is to let the silica gel achieve room temperature, to avoid condensation or moisture absorption by reason of the temperature differential while closing.
After cooling is finished, it is immediately sealed and stored and the silica gel is in a dry, useable activated form and can be directly used.
Briefly: Heating = activation, Cooling = safe preparation, Sealing = keep the activity.
2. Correct Operating Procedures Make Sure There Is No "Activity" Loss
Activities
Operating Points
Objective
1. Regeneration of heating
Heating in an oven at 100–120°C for 1–2 hours
Removes moisture and regenerates adsorption capacity
2. Passive Cooling
Cooling in an oven with the power switched off for 30–60 min
Protects structure and prevents absorption of moisture Heat
3. Quick Sealing
Sealed in a bag or desiccant within 5 minutes of cooling
Prevents ambient moisture from entering. Locks in dryness.
If it is not sealed immediately after cooling it will quickly start to absorb moisture from the air and slowly decrease its activity.
3. When does Reactivation occur?
The heating regeneration process should only be performed once the silica gel has been utilised and has reabsorbed moisture (becomes pink / red or green):
Judgement Criteria: Discolouration ≥1/3;
Operation Suggestion: Write down the result after each regeneration. More than 5 regenerations led to improved performance monitoring.
In practical use, the "regeneration + cooling + sealing" completes one entire activation cycle without any further processing.
