How to Replace the Heater Cartridge on an Ender 3 (Pro/V2/SE)
Replacing a heater cartridge is one of the most common maintenance jobs on any Ender 3 series printer. Whether your old cartridge has developed an internal break, is giving inconsistent temperatures, or simply died after 2–3 years of heavy printing, the replacement process is actually quite straightforward.
Here's a realistic, step-by-step guide that should take most people 20–45 minutes the first time.
What You'll Need
New heater cartridge (24V, 40W is the stock spec for almost all Ender 3 variants)
Good quality Phillips #1 and #2 screwdrivers
2–2.5 mm Allen keys (most hotends use these sizes)
Small adjustable wrench or 6 mm socket (for the thermistor nut on some hotends)
Needle-nose pliers
Kapton tape or heat-shrink (highly recommended)
Optional: thermal paste (very thin layer) or thermal compound for slightly better heat transfer
Zip ties or small wire loom for cable management
Pro tip: Buy 2–3 cartridges at once. They're cheap (~$5–9 each from reputable sellers) and having spares is very comforting when one decides to die at 3 a.m.
Step-by-Step Replacement Guide
Safety first – full power down
Turn off and unplug the printer
Wait at least 5–10 minutes (capacitors can hold voltage for a surprisingly long time)
Remove the silicone sock (if you have one)
Gently pull it off while the hotend is still cool. Don't tear it.
Remove the fan shroud / part cooling duct
Usually 2–4 screws (M3)
On some aftermarket shrouds you may need to disconnect the fan connector first
Unplug the old heater cartridge wires
Most Ender 3 stock boards have the heater cartridge on the big screw terminals labeled "HOTEND HEATER" or "HEATER 1"
Loosen both screws completely, then gently wiggle the wires out
Very important: note which wire goes to which terminal (red & black usually don't matter, but write it down anyway)
Loosen the heater block grub screws
There are normally two set screws on the side of the heater block
Use the correct size Allen key (usually 1.5 mm or 2 mm) and loosen them both quite a bit (don't take them out completely yet)
Remove the old cartridge
Most of the time it will pull straight out with a bit of wiggling + gentle pulling with pliers on the ceramic part, not on the wires!
If it's completely stuck (very common with old, carbonized paste):
Heat the block to 100–150 °C (yes, plug the printer back in temporarily)
Loosen the set screws even more
Try again while it's warm – almost always comes out
Clean the cartridge hole
Use a small wire brush, old toothbrush, or even a rolled-up piece of sandpaper (400–800 grit)
Goal: remove old thermal paste, carbon, and oxidation
Prepare the new cartridge
Measure how far the wires should stick out (usually 35–45 mm from the block)
Apply a very thin layer of thermal paste on the metal tube (optional but helps)
Slide it in until it bottoms out gently
Tighten the set screws
Tighten alternately in small increments (like tightening lug nuts)
Do NOT overtighten – you can easily deform/crush the cartridge
Finger tight + 1/8–1/4 turn with the Allen key is usually enough
Reconnect the wires
Insert them fully into the screw terminals
Tighten firmly – loose connections = burning smell later
Cable management
Re-route the wires the same way they were before
Use fresh Kapton tape or heat shrink on any exposed wire sections
Zip-tie the cable bundle to prevent strain on the connector
Reassemble everything
Put the silicone sock back on (optional but very helpful)
Reattach the fan shroud/duct
Test
Power on → go to Prepare → Preheat PLA (or 200 °C)
Watch the temperature graph for the first 5 minutes
Good signs: quick heat-up, stable temperature, no wild swings
Bad signs: very slow heating, temperature stuck at 40–70 °C, smell of burning plastic → immediately power off and check connections
Common Gotchas & Quick Fixes
Cartridge won't come out even at 150 °C → apply gentle twisting motion while pulling
New cartridge heats very slowly → one of the set screws is probably not touching the cartridge
Temperature reading jumps around → thermistor got pulled out a little when you removed the heater – re-seat it
"Thermal Runaway" error → almost always a loose/crushed heater wire connection
Changing the heater cartridge is honestly one of those jobs that feels scary the first time and boringly routine after the third time.
