Plastic injection: how plastic products are created every day

Plastic injection molding has been offering plastic molded parts for almost two centuries now and continues to grow! Without the bright minds of those in the field, we could do without the hundreds of things we have hitherto depended on.
The plastic injection molding process is responsible for the production of common items such as keyboards, toys and power tools, so you can see how important it is to our lifestyles today. What surprised me the most about this process was that until recently I had heard very little about it! You would think that with something so widely used, producing so many important devices, conversations about it are as mundane as the products it makes!
So what is this plastic injection mold and where does it come from?
Throughout industrialization, there has been a lot of pressure to reduce industrial waste. Indeed, many industrial processes can be harmful to the environment, but plastic injection molding is actually one of the safest! Since injection molding is used with such frequency it is a good thing that it does not pose a danger to the environment, otherwise we would have to look for new ways to produce so many things. Fortunately, injection molding has been perfected since its inception in 1868.
John Wesley Hyatt came up with this idea when he began to wonder how to make a complete set of billiards easier than before. He started injecting a material called celluloid into the spherical molds he had molded, and thus, injection molding was born. Celluloid was discovered many years before it was used by Hyatt and is sometimes used to simulate bone or ivory in products. Soon, Hyatt's business grew, and he felt his process too, so he created the first injection molding machine that operated with a piston mechanism.
Injection molded parts quickly started to become very popular and the industry was really allowed to flourish. Nearly 100 years after the success of Hyatt billiards, James Hendry has completely turned that process in a new direction. He replaced the piston of an old Hyatt machine with an industrial screw. The introduction of the screw was unlike anything the industry had ever seen before, it immediately boosted production 10 times and was adopted by almost every manufacturer in the industry. The first thing a manufacturer needs to consider when starting the plastic injection molding process is the type of plastic they want to make their product with. There are many variations of too dangerous plastic, and plastic companies are always concerned about producing safe products for their customers. That's why it's important to use the right plastic that can be used including polyvinyl chloride (also known as PVC, commonly used for pipes), acrylic, Teflon, delrin and polystyrene; all in the form of coarse particles called resins.
Ensuring plastic is safe and environmentally friendly is important to consumers and manufacturers. So how do we deal with the problem of non-biodegradable plastic? It's as simple as recycling, most plastics can go through plastic intrusive molding as many times as needed. Recycling is cheaper and easier for everyone involved, including the environment!
Once the resin has been selected, it is time for the actual plastic extrusion process to begin. First, engineers feed the granules (or plastic) into a device called a feed hopper, which essentially allows the plastic to be fed into the rest of the machine by gravity. The hopper fills the plastic into a barrel-shaped heating cylinder, which heats the plastic to temperatures up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
As the cylinder heats up, the screw comes into play, applying tremendous force to the molten plastic. The molten liquid plastic then passes through a series of intricate thin screens, meant to catch any flaws or contaminants in the molten plastic. These screens are held together by a washer-shaped piece of metal with a hole in it. The molten plastic is pushed through these holes and into the final part of the machine called the mold.
