The CAD model is converted into a grid structure, which is composed of 3D geometric elements and forms the basis of flow simulation. Each element has specific physical properties, and these properties are related to each other. The figure shows the flow simulation result of the bumper beam. In the blue area, the SMC is placed in the mold and starts to flow when molding pressure is applied. Red indicates the flow front, reaching the edge of the cavity (step 3). The main results obtained by the flow simulation are, firstly, the filling time, and secondly whether the cavity is completely filled, and whether there is a welding line where the materials meet. Welding lines should be avoided, especially on visible parts.
