Star and delta connection methods for 380V heating elements: Comparison and selection

In 380V power-powered heating elements, common wiring methods include star and delta connections. These two methods differ in electrical connection and current distribution. This article compares and discusses star and delta connections for 380V heating elements to help select the appropriate wiring method.

Star Connection:

In a star connection, one end of each of the three resistance wires of the heating element is connected together, forming a star connection. This connection point is called the star point, while the other ends are connected to the three phase lines of the power supply. The star connection provides a more stable and even current distribution, allowing each resistance wire to bear an equal load.

Delta Connection:

In a delta connection, each end of each of the three resistance wires of the heating element is directly connected to the three phase lines of the power supply, forming a closed delta connection. The delta connection provides higher power output, but the current distribution may not be as even, resulting in some resistance wires having a heavier load.

Current Distribution:

In a star connection, the current is evenly distributed through the star points, ensuring an equal load on each resistance wire and reducing the risk of overload. This even distribution helps improve heating efficiency and extend the lifespan of the heating element.

In a delta connection, however, the current passes directly through each resistance wire, potentially resulting in an uneven load. Some resistance wires may bear a larger current load, increasing the risk of overload and damage. Therefore, a delta connection is more suitable for high-power applications.

Application Scenarios:

Star connections are suitable for applications requiring uniform current distribution, such as ovens and electric furnaces that require uniform temperature distribution.

Delta connections are suitable for applications requiring high power output, such as high-power furnaces and industrial equipment requiring rapid heating and high-temperature environments.

Installation and Maintenance:

When installing star and delta connections, it is necessary to follow the corresponding wiring standards and safety regulations. Because star connections provide uniform current distribution and reduce the risk of overload on the resistance wires, they are relatively easier to maintain and troubleshoot.

However, due to its higher power output, delta wiring may require a more robust power supply and insulation, necessitating greater attention and expertise to ensure safety.

When selecting the wiring method for a 380V heating element, an evaluation based on specific application requirements and safety considerations is necessary. Star wiring is suitable for scenarios requiring even current distribution, while delta wiring is suitable for scenarios with higher power output requirements. Ensure compliance with relevant safety standards during installation and use, and consult with professionals for appropriate wiring selection and recommendations.
