Forming Process of Semi Solid Metals

The basic forming processes of semi-solid metals are divided into two types: rheoforming and thixoforming, as shown in Figure 3. The alloy raw material liquid melted by heating is formed into semi-solid slurry during the crystallization and solidification process through mechanical stirring, electromagnetic stirring, or other composite stirring. The following processes are divided into two types: one is to directly press the semi-solid slurry into the mold cavity for die-casting forming, or to directly roll, extrude, and other processing methods for the semi-solid slurry, namely rheological forming; Another method is to make semi solid slurry into ingots, which are reheated to a semi solid temperature to form a semi solid slurry and then subjected to forming processing, which is known as thixoforming.

The products produced by the semi solid metal forming process have better quality compared to ordinary processing methods, due to the higher viscosity of thixotropic materials and lower forming temperature compared to liquid metals. Taking die-casting as an example, semi-solid metal is filled with a "sticky solid front end" in the mold, while the liquid metal is filled with a "splash like" shape, which makes it easier to get involved in gases and inclusions, resulting in defects; Due to the significant reduction in solidification shrinkage of semi-solid metals compared to full liquid metals, the integrity of the parts is improved and the dimensions are nearly net shaped. Table 1 provides a comparison of the performance between aluminum alloy semi solid formed parts and ordinary formed parts, indicating that semi solid formed parts have significant performance advantages.
