The key role of high temperature anti-corrosion thermocouples in industry

As the core technology in the field of industrial temperature measurement, high-temperature anti-corrosion thermocouple plays an irreplaceable role in high-temperature and corrosive environments. It not only ensures production safety, but also improves energy utilization efficiency and product quality. In the future, with the advancement of materials science and sensing technology, it will continue to promote the development of industrial automation and intelligence, and become the "temperature guardian" of modern manufacturing.

1. Structure and working principle

High-temperature anti-corrosion thermocouple is a temperature sensor specially used for the environment. Its core feature is that it can work stably for a long time at high temperatures (usually up to 1000°C or above) and in highly corrosive media (such as acids, alkalis, salts, etc.). Its main structure includes:

1. Thermocouple wire: usually made of alloy materials such as platinum-rhodium (Pt-Rh), nickel-chromium (Ni-Cr) or tungsten-rhenium (W-Re), with high melting point and good thermoelectric stability.

2. Protective sleeve: ceramics (such as alumina, silicon carbide), stainless steel (such as 310S, Inconel600) or special alloys are used to resist high-temperature oxidation and chemical corrosion.

3. Insulating materials: such as high-purity magnesium oxide (MgO), used to prevent short circuits between thermocouple wires and enhance mechanical strength.

4. Junction box: adopts high temperature resistant and explosion-proof design to ensure stable signal transmission.

The working principle of thermocouple is based on the Seebeck effect, that is, two different metals generate electromotive force (voltage) under temperature gradient, and the temperature value can be calculated by measuring the voltage. Thermocouples optimize materials and structures to ensure that they can still provide accurate and reliable temperature data in harsh environments.

II. Industrial applications

1. Petrochemical industry

In the process of oil refining, cracking, catalytic reaction, etc., the temperature is usually as high as 800°C~1200°C, and corrosive gases such as hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and sulfur dioxide (SO₂) are present. Ordinary thermocouples are easily corroded or oxidized to fail, while it uses Hastelloy or Monel protective sleeves, which can work stably for a long time and ensure the safe operation of reactors, pipelines and storage tanks.

2. Metallurgical industry

Steel smelting, aluminum electrolysis and other processes involve high-temperature molten metals (such as molten steel, aluminum liquid) and corrosive furnace gases (such as CO, Cl₂). High-temperature anti-corrosion thermocouples use silicon carbide (SiC) or corundum (Al₂O₃) ceramic sleeves, which can withstand high temperatures above 1600°C and prevent metal vapor erosion, ensuring precise temperature control during the smelting process.

3. Power industry

Temperature monitoring of boilers, steam turbines and heat exchangers is essential in thermal power plants and nuclear power plants. It can resist corrosion from high-temperature steam, sulfides and fly ash, and avoid equipment overheating or explosion accidents caused by temperature measurement failure.

4. Aerospace and automobile manufacturing

Aircraft engines, rocket combustion chambers and automobile exhaust treatment systems (such as catalytic converters) need to work at temperatures. It uses platinum-rhodium alloy or tungsten-rhenium thermocouple wires to provide accurate data in extreme environments of 2000°C to ensure the safety and efficiency of the power system.

5. Waste incineration and environmental protection engineering

There are strong acids (HCl), dioxins and other corrosive components in waste incinerators and industrial waste gas treatment devices. It uses polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coating or titanium alloy protection tube to effectively extend the service life and assist environmental monitoring.

Three, key advantages

1. High temperature resistance: It can work at 1000°C~1800°C for a long time, and some models can reach 2300°C.

2. Corrosion resistance: It uses special alloys or ceramic materials to resist the erosion of acids, alkalis, salts and reducing gases.

3. High precision and stability: The thermocouple wire material is strictly screened to ensure that the temperature measurement error is less than ±1.5°C.

4. Long life and low maintenance: Compared with ordinary thermocouples, its service life can be increased by 3~5 times, reducing the frequency of shutdown and maintenance.

Four, future development trends

With the development of industrial intelligence, high-temperature anti-corrosion thermocouples are evolving towards higher precision, stronger corrosion resistance, wireless transmission and self-diagnosis functions. For example:

-Smart thermocouple: integrated temperature transmitter and Internet of Things (IoT) technology to achieve remote monitoring.

-Nano coating technology: such as graphene coating, further improves high temperature oxidation resistance.

-New alloy materials: such as tantalum (Ta) and niobium (Nb) alloys, suitable for more harsh corrosive environments.
