1. Contamination:
One major problem that can wreak havoc on the performance of a hydraulic system is contaminated fluid. Air and water are two of the most common contaminants that find their way into a hydraulic fluid supply system.
Water contamination can cause the hydraulic fluid to take on a milky appearance and affect the lubricating properties of the hydraulic fluid. Water in the hydraulic fluid can also limit the hydraulic fluid's ability to protect against corrosion.
Air contamination is just as detrimental to the performance of a hydraulic system. Air makes the hydraulic fluid more elastic and not compress properly. Hydraulic fluid contaminated by air will take on a foamy appearance.

2. Cavitation:
Cavitation is another problem that can affect hydraulic fluid. While it sounds like a complex problem, cavitation is actually a simple process.
Cavitation occurs when there is a rapid change in hydraulic fluid pressure. This rapid change causes bubbles, called cavities, to form in the fluid. Whenever these cavities collapse, they send out tiny shock waves. Metal parts close to these ruptured bubbles can be severely damaged as a result of the shock waves.
If you notice a sudden increase in noise or feel an increase in vibration during the operation of your hydraulic system, cavitation may be the cause. You can combat cavitation by reducing motor speed, lowering pump temperature, and installing an impeller inducer.
Aging:
Over time, the hydraulic fluid flowing through your system becomes less and less viable. As the fluid ages, it loses its ability to perform the important tasks required to keep your hydraulic system working properly.
Aging occurs when the chemical additives that improve the performance of hydraulic fluid begin to break down. When additives become less effective, your hydraulic fluid becomes less effective, too.
Purchase only enough hydraulic fluid to satisfy your system so that you don't have to store any extra. This will help you avoid using aged fluid in your system. You should also schedule routine fluid flushes to clear the hydraulic fluid from your system before aging affects the effectiveness of your system.
Take good care of your hydraulic equipment so that you don't experience any unexpected downtime or production delays. Give the same level of care to your hydraulic fluid. Contamination, cavitation, and aging are all problems that stem from hydraulic fluid and can ultimately lead to serious system failures if not addressed in a timely manner.
