What Are The Hidden Disadvantages Of Ultra-cheap Disposable Hot Runner Thermocouples
Leave a message
Many injection moulding firms prefer the ultra-low-cost disposable hot runner thermocouple, and they replace the failed thermocouple rather than fix it to avoid short-term costs. Despite the low initial purchase price, there are numerous hidden disadvantages, such as fast ageing, huge inaccuracy, high failure rate and induced mould damage, resulting in more comprehensive loss in the long run and actually not cost-effective at all.
Recycled inferior alloy materials and uncalibrated bulk goods are used in ultra-cheap disposable thermocouples, which have substantial initial temperature measurement error and extremely fast ageing drift . After usage for a short time, the temperature deviation is visible, which leads to the thermal imbalance of hot runner, and causes the defects such as product shrinkage, black spots, weld lines, etc., bringing large scrap loss considerably exceeding the price difference of qualified thermocouples.
The structural procedure is harsh without integrated sealing and anti-corrosion treatment. The sheath is thin and easy to corrode and perforate by plastic volatile gas. The internal insulation layer is poor in high temperature resistance, ageing and short circuit, often causing temperature runaway and heating coil burnout. Each failure necessitates disassembly, replacement and troubleshooting of moulds leading to frequent production downtimes and delayed order deliveries.
Disposable items have low batch consistency and the drift degree of each thermocouple is variable. Applied to multi-cavity mould, it would cause serious temperature differential between cavities, unstable product size and weight, can't lock process settings for a long time, raising daily debugging labour cost . In addition, inferior items are easy to leave metal debris and welding residues in the mounting hole during replacement, degrading the precision of the manifold hole, and hindering subsequent normal installation of certified thermocouples.
From the life cycle cost standpoint, ultra-cheap disposable thermocouples save minor upfront costs but incur substantial hidden losses from scrap, downtime, mould maintenance and quality complaints. For long-term production operation, the true cost-effective solution is to use regular brand standard thermocouples with steady performance and long service life.
