What are the main types of silicon carbide products and what are their uses?

Silicon carbide products come in various forms, manufactured using silicon carbide raw materials and various processing techniques. Silicon carbide products can be divided into many categories, with different types for different applications. So what are the main types of silicon carbide products and their uses? Today, we'll introduce them to you!

Types and Uses of Silicon Carbide Products:

1. Metal Products Industry

Silicon carbide products utilize its heat resistance, high strength, excellent thermal conductivity, and impact resistance as high-temperature indirect heating materials, such as in vertical fractionation furnaces, distillation tower trays, aluminum electrolytic cells, copper forging furnace linings, zinc powder furnace arc plates, thermocouple protection tubes, etc.

2. Applications of Silicon Carbide Products in the Steel Industry

Utilizing silicon carbide's corrosion resistance, thermal shock resistance, wear resistance, and good heat transfer properties, it is used in the linings of large-scale ironmaking blast furnaces to extend their service life. Utilizing its high heat transfer coefficient, excellent heat transfer properties, and high firing strength, silicon carbide is used in the manufacture of thin-plate metal kiln furniture. This not only reduces kiln furniture volume but also improves the loading capacity and product quality of industrial kilns, shortening production time. It is an ideal indirect material for firing ceramic glazes.

3. Applications of Silicon Carbide Products in Metallurgical and Mineral Processing Industries

Silicon carbide has a strength second only to diamond and strong wear resistance. It is an excellent raw material for wear-resistant pipes, centrifugal impellers, pump chambers, hydrocyclones, and ore hopper linings. Its wear resistance is 5-20 times that of pig iron and plastics, making it one of the best materials for aerospace applications.

Applications in the ceramics and grinding wheel industries: Utilizing its high heat transfer coefficient, excellent heat transfer properties, and high firing strength, silicon carbide is used in the manufacture of thin-plate metal kiln furniture. This not only reduces kiln furniture volume but also improves the loading capacity and product quality of industrial kilns, shortening production time. It is an ideal indirect material for firing ceramic glazes.

Silicon carbide products can be categorized into many types, depending on the application scenario. They are generally used more in mechanical equipment. The above is a detailed introduction to "What are the key features and main uses of silicon carbide products?"

Characteristics and Synthesis Methods of Silicon Carbide Products

Silicon carbide raw materials have higher melting points, mostly above 3000℃, such as TiC (3107℃) and ZrC (3530℃). Under relatively high conditions, carbides will oxidize, but most still have higher oxidation resistance than higher melting point metals, and also higher than high-purity graphite and carbon. Most carbides have high hardness and good electrical and thermal conductivity. Some carbide properties are shown in Table 8-6. The basic synthesis methods for carbides include: direct reaction of metals with carbon powder; lithium aluminum hydride (reaction of hydroxides with carbon); and reaction of metals with carbon-containing gases.

How are Silicon Carbide Products Manufactured?

The manufacture of silicon carbide products requires silicon carbide raw materials. The industrial production method of silicon carbide involves mixing quartz sand (56%), coking coal (35%), sawdust (7%), and salt (2%) together and heating the mixture to around 2200℃ in an electric furnace. The salt removes residue from the quartz sand and coking coal, while the sawdust creates vents, facilitating gas release. A columnar resistance heating element, composed of silicon carbide or carbon particles, is placed in the center of the furnace, with the raw materials closely surrounding it. The resulting small crystals are crushed, washed with acid and alkali, and then magnetically separated to remove any remaining iron. After drying, the silicon carbide raw material is obtained.
