What Connection Head (Junction Box) Material Is Best for PTFE Heaters in Corrosive Atmospheres?

The PTFE sheath and the tank side components are corrosion-proof; however, the electrical termination box above the tank is exposed to corrosive vapours, splashes and humidity. Wrong choice of enclosure material may cause premature electrical failure and impact system performance and safety. The long term durability of PTFE heater depends very much on the selection of the proper junction box material in corrosive atmospheres.

Materials commonly used for junction boxes in corrosive environments
The junction boxes for corrosive atmospheres are made of several materials. All have their own advantages and disadvantages. The choice of material relies on the individual environmental circumstances, such as the type of corrosive exposure, temperature and mechanical stress.

Painted Aluminium Alloy
Painted cast aluminium is an inexpensive choice for moderate indoor applications where the risk of corrosion is minimal. The surface paint offers some protection from the elements, but in acidic or corrosive vapours it may blister or deteriorate, allowing the underlying aluminium to corrode. This material is appropriate for applications where exposure to strong chemicals is minimal or washdowns are infrequent.

In practice, painted cast aluminium should not be used in situations with acid fumes or high humidity, as the protective paint coating can degrade with time and compromise the integrity of the junction box.

PP and PVDF
Both Polypropylene and PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride) are great candidates for harsh acid conditions. Both materials are light weight and very resistant to chemicals. This makes them inexpensive and durable. Polypropylene is utilised for general-purpose applications and resists most acids and alkalis. It may however be softened by strong oxidisers e.g. pure chlorine or nitric acid.

Meanwhile, PVDF is chemically resistant to strong acids, chlorine, and high heat. It is especially well suited for applications where higher temperature resistance and chemical exposure are needed.

Both polypropylene and PVDF provide great protection for the junction box in plating shop conditions or other situations with strong acids and alkalis. Polypropylene is cheaper, however PVDF is the more robust option for harsh situations.

Stainless Steel (316L) (2)
The stainless steel 316L is the most lasting material for junction boxes in corrosive atmospheres, providing the highest level of mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. This material is quite resistant to many different chemicals making it perfect for washdown areas or outdoor places where it will be exposed to water, acids or harsh environments often. 316L stainless steel is also impact resistant, which is important in circumstances where the junction box may be susceptible to physical impact.

But stainless steel is more costly than other materials and is generally reserved for applications where durability and resistance to both corrosion and mechanical damage are needed. It's the recommended solution for severe outdoor locations or regions with regular exposure to cleaning products and physical pressure.

Sealing significance of gasket and cable gland
The integrity of the gasket is an important element in sustaining the enclosure's resistance to environmental exposure whichever material was chosen for the junction box. Often EPDM, Viton, or silicone gaskets are used to provide a suitable seal between the junction box and cover. The gasket material should be selected for its resistance to the chemicals in the environment, and its ability to maintain a tight seal over time.

Cable gland sealing is equally important to ensure the integrity of the enclosure. This is to prevent corrosive substances from entering the junction box. Proper sealing around the cable entrance points is necessary to keep the electrical components safe and working. This is particularly true in areas where washdowns or high humidity levels are present.

The junction box is the electrical heart of the PTFE heater system. The choice of the material for the junction box is as crucial as the wetted components of the heater. Polypropylene, PVDF and stainless steel are suitable materials for corrosive atmospheres to different extents, with stainless steel being the most durable, especially for washdown or outdoor applications. For less severe situations, polypropylene or PVDF offer economical and highly chemical resistant solutions.

A sturdy option is crucial for the longevity of the complete heating system. A safe and reliable PTFE heater system will be guaranteed by the correct junction box material along with a proper gasket and cable gland seal. If the other components are neglected, then the longevity of a component in one area of the system does not ensure the durability of the system.
