What Thermocouple Solutions Suit Low-Pressure Low-Temperature Hot Runner Molding?

Low pressure low temperature hot runner technique is widely used on heat sensitive plastic molding including PVC soft rubber, TPE elastomers, foamed PP materials and biodegradable PLA resin. These materials are prone to rapid degradation at high temperatures, necessitating hot runner systems to provide stable low-temperature constant heat. Conventional high-temperature K/J thermocouples have signal lag and low-sensitivity defects that cannot satisfy the requirements of low-temperature precise control and require dedicated low-temperature high-sensitivity thermocouple matching schemes.

Type E thermocouples are the predominant choice for high-sensitivity measurements of low-temperature heat-sensitive polymers. Alloy wires of type E consist of nickel-chromium (positive) and copper-constantan (negative). They produce a thermoelectric potential that is almost twice as much as K-type probes at temperatures below 400°C. The higher signal sensitivity makes it possible for the temperature controller to immediately detect the small 0.5°C temperature variation, and the ultra-fine PID power regulation is realized to minimize local overheating for heat sensitive melts. Type E's continuous operating temperature range is 0-800°C, precisely complementing the 180-320°C molding window of TPE, PLA and soft PVC. It effectively prevents material yellowing, foaming and molecular chain breakdown caused by tiny temperature overshoots.

For ultra-low temperature foamed material molds below 220°C, the improved J-type thermocouples with short-cycle calibration are still cost-effective. Since the operating temperature is well below the J-type's oxidation limit of 750°C, the risk of iron wire drift is greatly reduced. The manufacturer chooses low-impurity, high-purity J-type alloy wires, with factory calibration tolerances maintained within ±2°C, which are suited for mass production of low-value foamed packaging products. However, J-type probes are not suitable for processes with occasional temperature surges beyond 700°C, because this would result in quick oxidation failure.

Structural optimization of low temperature hot runner thermocouples for ultra-low thermal mass fast response design . The thin-wall 0.5-1.0mm MI sheath probes are uniformly adopted to limit the heat absorption volume. The detecting tip can feedback micro temperature changes of low temperature melts within 0.2 seconds. The overheat lag problem of thick standard probes is eliminated. The spring bayonet contact structure is necessary. Small thermal expansion of the low-temperature mold steel and fixed press fit probes readily generate air gaps, which cause low reading deviation, which in turn leads to the correction of controller overheating.

Special insulations for heat-sensitive situations of plastic manufacture. Biodegradable PLA and foamed plastics generate a tiny quantity of organic acid volatile gas during melting . So probe sheaths upgrade to 316L stainless steel with mirror polishing to withstand weak acid corrosion. Outer outgoing cable insulation is made of PTFE instead of glass fiber braid. Glass fiber absorbs organic volatile compounds and ages quickly under long-term low-temperature heat radiation, while PTFE maintains stable insulation without chemical reaction with material decomposition gas.

After the installation of low-temperature specialized thermocouples, the controller parameter synchronization is essential. If you are using the Type E probes, change the thermocouple type setting of each channel on the controller from default K-type to E-type. Incompatible parameter setting will cause reading deviation of more than 10°C, which will lead to significant material degradation. To prevent temperature overshoot, reduce the PID heating integration parameter to meet the Type E thermocouple high-sensitivity signal characteristics and reduce the power output amplitude.

Low pressure low temperature hot runner molding is based on high sensitivity low temperature thermocouples to lock narrow material processing temperature windows, which makes it possible to minimize waste of expensive heat sensitive and biodegradable raw materials, and improve the finished product yield of soft rubber and foam plastic parts.
