Why do PFA welding rods weld PTFE? What are the specifications, sizes and application scenarios?

I. Introduction to PFA Welding Rods

PFA welding rods are a welding material made of fusible polytetrafluoroethylene (PFA), specifically designed for joining polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and other fluoroplastics. The chemical name for PFA is tetrafluoroethylene-perfluoroalkoxy vinyl ether copolymer. Its molecular structure consists of groups such as perfluoropropyl vinyl ether (PPVE) incorporated into the carbon chain of PTFE. This structural modification retains the corrosion resistance and high-temperature resistance of PTFE while making PFA melt-processable-the core reason for its use as a welding rod.

II. Core Physical Properties of PFA Welding Rods

1. Excellent Temperature Resistance

PFA welding rods can operate stably and for extended periods in extreme temperatures ranging from -80°C to 260°C, with transient temperature resistance exceeding 300°C. Their thermal stability is comparable to that of PTFE, but their lower melting point (300-310°C) facilitates hot working.

2. Extremely Chemically Inert

Inheriting PTFE's "King of Plastics" properties, it exhibits excellent corrosion resistance to nearly all acids, bases, and organic solvents, including highly corrosive media such as concentrated sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric acid.

3. Mechanical and Surface Properties

Low Friction Coefficient: The surface is smooth, with the lowest friction coefficient among plastics, making it less susceptible to impurities sticking to the weld interface after welding.

Translucent Appearance: PFA welding rods made from high-purity raw materials are translucent, but the transparency of the weld may be affected by the welding process.

Excellent Flexibility: Remains flexible even at low temperatures and is resistant to brittle cracking.

4. Electrical Insulation and Safety

It possesses high dielectric strength and low dielectric loss, making it suitable for welding high-precision electronic components. It also meets medical-grade biocompatibility standards (such as FDA) and is non-toxic and non-polluting.

III. PFA Welding Rod Classification and Common Sizes

PFA welding rods are categorized into round and flat shapes based on their cross-sectional shape.

Circular sizes (diameter, in mm) include: 2, 3, 3.5, 4, 5, etc.

Flat sizes (width * thickness, in mm): 12*2.5, 14*2.5, 17*2.5, etc.

Single roll length (m): 10, 50, 100

IV. Why can PFA weld PTFE?

PTFE is difficult to weld using traditional methods due to its stable molecular structure and infusibility. Dankai PFA welding rods address this challenge through the following mechanisms:

Like dissolves like principle: PFA and PTFE have extremely low surface tensions (approximately 18-20 dyn/cm). Molten PFA wets the PTFE surface, forming a molecular bond.

Hot-melt fluidity: When heated above 420°C, PFA melts and flows, filling the PTFE joint. Upon cooling, a weld is formed with a strength 60%-80% that of the base material (tensile strength approximately 12-16 MPa).

V. Core Applications of PFA Welding Rods

1. Chemical Corrosion Protection Equipment

Welding reactor linings, pipes, valves, and other applications to repair corrosion damage to PTFE components.

2. Semiconductor and High-Purity Industries

Used for welding pipes in ultra-pure chemical delivery systems to prevent metal ion contamination.

3. Medical Device Manufacturing

Fluoroplastic components used to connect medical devices such as syringes and catheters meet sterility requirements.
