A lot of maintenance workers don't know how to fix these problems, which means the manufacturing line is down for a lengthy time and maintenance costs go up. Most of the difficulties with the cartridge heater are caused by using it wrong or by little problems that may be fixed easily if you know how to troubleshoot.

The most typical problem is that the cartridge heater doesn't heat up. When this happens, a lot of people think that the cartridge heater is broken, but most of the time it's only because the wiring terminal isn't making good contact or the power is off. You can first check to see if the power supply is working and if the power switch is on. Next, look at the wire termination of the cartridge heater to determine if there is oxidation or a loose connection. You can tighten the terminal again if it is slack. If it is oxidized, you can polish it with sandpaper and then reconnect it. You can also use a multimeter to check the resistance of the cartridge heater if none of the other ways work. If the resistance is infinite, it signifies that the cartridge heater needs to be replaced since the internal heating wire is broken.


Another common problem is that the cartridge heater doesn't heat up enough. The power is fine, but the temperature can't exceed 280°C, or the heating speed is quite slow. Based on what I've seen, this problem is usually caused by the cartridge heater's power density or inadequate heat transfer. If the power density of the cartridge heater you choose is too low, it won't be able to heat things up enough. You need to replace the cartridge heater right now with one that has a higher power density, but not more than 7 W/cm². If the power density is right, the surface of the cartridge heater can be dirty, have oil stains, or have scale on it, which makes it harder for heat to move. It is important to clean the cartridge heater's surface right now so that heat can move smoothly. The fit between the cartridge heater and the installation hole is also important. If there is a gap, it will affect how well the heat moves, but you can use heat-conducting paste to fill the gap and make the heat move better.

The 280℃ cartridge heater also often has problems with changing temperatures, which will influence the quality of the product. The main reason for this problem is that the temperature control system isn't working right or the temperature sensor isn't making good contact. First, make sure that the temperature controller is working properly. You need to replace the temperature controller if it stops working because it can't control the cartridge heater's temperature correctly. After that, look at the temperature sensor (such the PT100 sensor) that is linked to the cartridge heater to determine if it is loose or broken. If the sensor is broken, it won't be able to reliably measure the temperature, which will cause the temperature to change. It needs to be replaced quickly. Also, changes in the power supply voltage might cause changes in temperature. This can be fixed by adding a voltage stabilizer.

Leakage is a more serious problem that could lead to safety incidents. The main cause of leaks is damage to the cartridge heater's insulation layer or insufficient insulation of the wiring connection. If there is a leak, the power supply must be turned off right away to avoid getting shocked. Next, look at the cartridge heater's surface to determine if the sheath is broken. The internal insulation layer will be compromised if the sheath is damaged, which would cause leakage. The cartridge heater has to be replaced. Check the wiring termination to determine if the insulation tape is loose or old. If the sheath is still intact, re-wrap the insulation tape to make sure it is still fine.
