The fluorination of PFA surface improves the fluorine content at surface and boosts its hydrophobicity. The plasma fluorination (CF4 plasma) leads to an increase of the contact angle with water from 110° to 130-140°. Chemical fluorination (F 2 gas) improves the contact angle to 140-150°. In high temperature brine, a higher contact angle results in less scale adhesion, since scale forming ions do not stick as well to the hydrophobic surface. Fluorination-Induced Hydrophobicity: Mechanism
PFA surface has a contact angle of 105-115° naturally. The density of CF₃ and CF₂ groups on the surface increases with plasma and chemical fluorination. These groups have less surface energy and make the surface more hydrophobic (greater contact angle). The critical surface tension is decreased from 18 mN/m to 12-15 mN/m.
