How is the mv voltage of a thermocouple generated

A thermocouple is a device that uses the thermoelectric effect to measure temperature. It is composed of wires made of two different metal materials, with one end of the two wires welded together to form a hot junction, and the other end connected to the indicator of the temperature measuring instrument. When the hot junction of the thermocouple comes into contact with the object being measured, a weak voltage signal is generated due to the thermoelectric effect. This signal is the mv voltage of the thermocouple.

1. Thermoelectric effect
The thermoelectric effect refers to the phenomenon of potential difference between two connected metal conductors at different temperatures. According to the different principles of thermoelectric effect, it can be divided into thermoelectric voltammetry effect, thermoelectric potential effect, and thermoelectric pencil effect.

2. Temperature measurement principle of thermocouples
The temperature measurement principle of thermocouples is based on the working principle of thermoelectric effect. When the hot junction of a thermocouple comes into contact with the object being measured, there will be a temperature difference between two different metal conductors, resulting in a weak potential difference. This potential difference is directly proportional to the temperature of the object being measured, and by measuring the magnitude of the potential difference, the temperature of the object being measured can be indirectly measured.

3. Calculation method for mv voltage of thermocouples
Due to the small potential difference generated by thermocouples, it is generally expressed in millivolts (mv). There is a certain linear relationship between the mv voltage of the thermocouple and the temperature of the measured object, and the measured potential difference can be converted into the actual temperature value through calibration.

4. Advantages of Thermocouples
As a temperature sensor, thermocouples have the following advantages: 1. Wide temperature measurement range, which can reach tens to thousands of degrees; 2. Fast response speed, suitable for situations that require rapid measurement; 3. High mechanical strength, able to adapt to harsh working environments; 4. Long service life, able to work stably for a long time.

5. Application fields of thermocouples
Thermocouples are widely used in temperature measurement and control processes in industrial automation control, petrochemicals, metallurgy, power, aerospace, and other fields.

6. Precautions for thermocouples
When using thermocouples for temperature measurement, the following points should be noted: 1. The contact part of the thermocouple should be in full contact with the measured object to ensure accurate temperature measurement; 2. Pay attention to the protection of thermocouples to avoid mechanical damage or chemical corrosion.

The weak potential difference generated by the thermoelectric effect allows thermocouples to indirectly measure the temperature of the object being measured, and calibration can convert the measured potential difference into the actual temperature value. Thermocouples have the advantages of wide temperature measurement range, fast response speed, high mechanical strength, and long service life, and are widely used in industrial automation control and other fields.
