How Long Does It Take to Regenerate Color-Changing Silica Gel Desiccant?

The silica gel desiccant that changes colour is usually regenerated in 1 to 2 hours. It can be rehydrated by heating it in an oven at 100-120°C to restore its moisture absorption characteristics.

1. Comparison of Regeneration Time of Different Methods

Method of Regeneration

Power/Temperature

Time needed

Applicable Use Cases

Oven Drying Method (Recommended)

100–120℃

1-2 hours

Popular in laboratories and houses . Even heating and reliable results .

Microwave Heating Method (Emergency)

Medium power (about 600W)

1-2 minutes each time Total time <5 minutes

Rapidly processes small quantities of silica gel. Requires stirring to prevent local overheating.

Method of Sunlight Exposure (Supplemental)

daylight

8–12 hours and beyond

Partially dehydrates; can be used as a pretreatment; cannot be fully regenerated.

Best Practice: Distribute the dehydrated silica gel uniformly in a heat resistant container, place in a preheated oven, and watch for the colour change from time to time. Remove it when it is all blue or all orange.

2. Major Factors Influencing Regeneration Time

Moisture absorption Mild moisture absorption can be shortened to 1 hour Complete saturation is recommended to extend to 2 hours

Amount and Thickness of Silica Gel: Stacking too high (>5cm) will prevent heat conduction and will need more time for heating or batch operation.

Differences in Equipment: Household ovens may vary in temperature, allow for buffer time.

Type Variations:

Blue Silica Gel (Contains Cobalt Chloride): Strictly regulate the temperature below 120℃, otherwise the indicator will oxidise and lose its function.

Orange Silica Gel (Cobalt Free, Eco Friendly) For best results heat at 100-120℃ for 1-2 hours to restore over 95% of adsorption capacity.

Let it cool down slowly in the switched-off oven after regeneration, before sealing and storing to avoid subsequent moisture absorption.

3. Operation Tips

Take away the plastic wrap in advance: to avoid toxic gas caused by high temperature melting;

Use a glass or ceramic tray, to resist high temperature and to prevent contamination of the silicone;

Periodically invert the granules: to increase the evenness of the heat and reduce the actual regeneration duration;

Use colour as a criterion Do not stick to a specific time Use the full restoration of the granules to their original colour as the criterion
