How to Clean and Reuse Color-Changing Silica Gel After Contamination

If the colour shifting silica gel is cleanable and reusable or not will depend on how contaminated it is. Mild contamination can be cleaned and repaired Severe contamination is irreversible and not advised for reuse

1.Light contamination: can be cleaned and reused

For circumstances where the surface is contaminated with dust, mild oil stains or has been in contact with the environment:

(1) Water Rinse Procedure (Recommended)

Steps: 1.

Place the silica gel particles into a filter or gauze:

Rinse with flowing water to wash away surface dirt;

After washing, place flat in a heat-resistant container;

Dry in an oven at 100-120℃ for 1-2 hours to remove the moisture and regenerate fully;

After cooling, seal and store.

Judgement Criteria: Colour is fully recovered by heating (blue→blue, orange→orange). No odour.

(2) Alcohol Wipe Method (Emergency Local Treatment)

Operation: Dip the cotton swab in a small amount of 75% medicinal alcohol and gently wipe the surface of the contaminated particles;

CAUTION: Do not soak in big volumes to prevent the alcohol from reaching the micropores and causing slight structural damage;

Subsequent Treatment: Air dry + high temperature dry for total dehydration.

This approach can remove certain organic residues but cannot eliminate pollutants that have entered deep into the pores.

2. Heavy contamination: the product cannot be reused since it is impossible to clean.

If the following conditions occur, the micropores are permanently blocked and cleaning will not restore performance:

Manifestations of Contamination Conclusion

Black yellow or charred particles. Heavily blocked micropores, with loss of adsorption capability.

[Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) No. 115-90-2] Sharp fumes or odours when heated. Contains volatile hazardous chemicals which are a safety hazard.

Greasy, clumpy or soft to the touch. Structural damage, permanent.

Used for moisture protection of food , pharmaceuticals , electronic equipment . Also replace slight contamination.

Special Reminder: Internal adsorption capacity cannot be restored by cleaning and dangers of cross contamination may arise. It is expressly restricted for usage in precision protection situations. 3. Safety and Environmental Considerations

Cobalt Chloride (Blue) Silica Gel This is a poisonous chemical residue and should not be thrown out indiscriminately.

It should be packed and labelled as "Cobalt-Containing Waste." Take it to a hazardous waste recycling site or submit it to a competent disposal service.

Cobalt-Free (Orange) Silica Gel (Eco-Friendly): The gel can be sealed and discarded as regular garbage to prevent dust dispersion.
