What are some methods to clean color-changing silicone?
Leave a message
The basic techniques of cleaning color-changing silicone are as follows: rinse with water, wipe with alcohol and air dry, then high temperature drying. These techniques are suitable for mildly contaminated surfaces, but do not return the silicone qualities for substantially filthy surfaces.
1. Water Rinse Process (Recommended for surface stains)
Suitable for: Dust, mild oil stains or environmental soiling;
Procedure: Take the silicone granules in a filter or cheesecloth;
Flush several times with running water until no visible soil remains;
Spread the cleaned granules out flat on a heatproof container.
Oven drying: dry in oven at 100~120℃ for 1~2 hours to regenerate entirely;
Cool, seal and store within 5 minutes.
Judging Criteria: The colour is totally restored after heating (blue → blue, orange → orange) and there is no smell.
The safest and most effective cleaning method for home users, restoring most of the qualities of the silicone.
2. Alcohol Wiping Method (Spot Treatment in Emergency)
Applicable to: Only for local organic residues (such as cosmetics, fingerprints and oil stains)
Method: 75% Medical alcohol was used to moisten a cotton swab;
Lightly rub over surface of infected particles;
Do not soak in excessive quantities, so that alcohol does not penetrate the micropores and cause some slight harm to the structure.
To be fully dehydrated, air dried need high temperature drying for 1 hour.
Note: Not for broad area pollution, only for emergency remediation.
It removes certain residues but does not fix the obstructed microporous structures.
3. Air Drying + High Temperature Regeneration (Necessary Next Step)
After all the cleaning processes the following has to be done:
First, let the surface wetness air dry naturally;
then dry at 100–120°C for 1–2 hours to guarantee total elimination of interior moisture and residual solvents;
Finally, to prevent secondary moisture absorption, cool naturally in an oven with the power off for 30–60 minutes.
Key Note: Cleaning is not a substitute for regeneration; heat is necessary to restore the drying ability.
4. When is cleaning and reuse not permitted?
Signs of Contamination Recommendations for Treatment
Black, yellow or burnt particles. Permanent, irreversible micropore blocking.
Smoke or pungent odour on heating: It contains dangerous volatile chemicals and is a safety hazard.
Greedy, clumpy or mushy to the touch. Structural deterioration, must be replaced.
If food, drugs or electronic equipment are even slightly soiled, replace them immediately.
