How to Determine if Color-Changing Silicone Needs Cleaning

The main criterion for judging the necessity of cleaning of colour changing silicone is detection of any anomalous colour, surface deposits, changes in odour or change in physical state. These are evidence that the product may have been in contact with oil, chemicals or organic materials, which will impact its usual use.

 

1. Obvious Signs You Need Cleaning

Key Note: If it has been used in bags containing greasy objects, kitchen tool cabinets or drawers near skincare products it is more likely to be contaminated and needs cleaning.

 

2. Three-Step Method of Home Rapid Testing

(1) Paper towel rub method: Take a small amount of particles and rub them vigorously with a white paper towel.

If you see oil streaks on the paper towel then you have oil contamination and need to clean.

(2) Water Soaking Method: Immerse the particles in clean water and allow to stand for 5 minutes.

Serious surface contamination and treatment required are indicated by the presence of a film of oil or floating materials on the water surface.

(3) Heating and observing method: Heat at 100-120℃ for 1-2 hours in a ventilated place.

If the container has smoke or a sticky residue or a distinct odour, this is a sign of organic contamination and cleaning or disposal is necessary.

If testing confirms minor contamination, cleaning can be tried and if testing confirms severe contamination, further use is not suggested.

 

3. Important Judgement Before Cleaning: Can it be saved?

If you can try cleaning if:

Only dust or fine oil marks on the surface;

Particles are whole, and the colour can be recovered partly following heat;

Not suitable for moisture protection of precision equipment. No cleaning needed, immediate replacement:

Blackened, yellowed or burnt particles. Particles that smoke or emit a smell when heated. Suitable for high demand applications such as cameras, pharmaceuticals and electronic equipment.

Practical tip: If contamination occurs, segregate and contain the contaminated material for disposal. Label it "Pending Disposal" so it is not used in important moisture barrier applications.
