How to Select Thermocouple Wire Diameter for Hot Runner
Leave a message
To guaranty the temperature measurement effect and service life of hot runner unique temperature measuring sensors, a sensible choice of thermocouple wire diameter is crucial. The efficiency of temperature control can be maximized by matching appropriate wire diameter thermocouples according to hot runner nozzle specification, manifold structure, and actual working temperature. Different wire diameter specifications correlate to different temperature response speed, high-temperature resistance performance, bending resistance, and installation applicable scenes.
The most popular specifications for small and medium-sized hot runner nozzles are miniature thin-diameter thermocouples with wire diameters less than 1.6 mm. This type of thin-diameter thermocouple is ideal for thin-wall product special nozzles and compact structure valve gate nozzles because of its tiny overall volume, flexible construction, and ability to be deeply placed in narrow reserved temperature measuring holes of various precision nozzles. It owns ultra-fast temperature sensing response speed, can capture subtle temperature fluctuation inside nozzle flow channel in real time, quickly feed back data to temperature controller to complete temperature adjustment, and fully meet high-precision temperature control demand of precision electronic parts and high appearance requirement products. However, thin-diameter thermocouples have comparatively weaker high-temperature compression and vibration resistance, making them unsuitable for long-term use in extremely high-temperature and highly vibrational work environments. Additionally, frequent mold opening and closing will clearly shorten the thermocouples' service life.
The majority of popular brand hot runner manifolds and large-size common nozzles are compatible with thermocouples with wire diameters between 2.0 and 3.0 mm, which fall under the category of medium conventional standards. In addition to having strong anti-extrusion and anti-bending capabilities, moderate sensitivity, and the ability to adapt to most injection molding conventional working temperature ranges, this specification thermocouple balances temperature response speed and structural firmness. In long-term continuous production, it is difficult to have loose sensing head faults and core wire breakage. Medium wire diameter thermocouples are the preferred temperature measuring accessories for the majority of mass production ordinary molds and multi-cavity packaging molds due to their high comprehensive cost performance, moderate production cost, adequate market spare parts supply, and easy on-site quick replacement.
Large integrated hot runner manifolds, ultra high-temperature engineering plastic special hot runner systems, and heavy-duty long-term continuous production molds are the primary applications for thick-diameter thermocouples with wire diameters more than 3.0 mm. Thick-diameter thermocouples can maintain stable temperature measurement accuracy for an extended period of time in working environments above 380 degrees Celsius because of their thick internal temperature measuring core wire, robust overall structure, superior high-temperature oxidation resistance, and strong vibration resistance. They are also difficult to age and drift. Its slow temperature sensing response speed and slight temperature data feedback delay make it unsuitable for precision products that need frequent, quick temperature adjustments. It is only appropriate for large parts production molds with stable process parameters and little need for temperature real-time response.
In addition to matching the size of the hot runner construction, the operating temperature of the processed plastic materials must be taken into consideration. Thin-diameter high-sensitivity thermocouples are preferred when processing common materials with low melting points; medium and thick-diameter durable thermocouples are chosen to extend service life when processing high-temperature modified plastics and readily carbonized raw materials. In the meantime, consult the original hot runner equipment's reserved hole diameter, make an effort to choose thermocouples with specifications that are consistent with the original factory matching models, steer clear of later installation modifications and poor contact brought on by mismatched wire diameter, and guaranty steady signal transmission and precise temperature measurement.
