How to Store Dried Magnesium Oxide

To preserve its activity and chemical stability after drying, magnesium oxide should be kept in a sealed container in a dry, cold, and well-ventilated environment to avoid moisture absorption and contamination.

 

1. Requirements for the Storage Environment

Dryness: It's important to keep the relative humidity below 50%. To stop magnesium oxide from reabsorbing moisture, a hygrometer can be used for monitoring.

Cool and Ventilated: To avoid thermal degradation or reduced activity, stay out of direct sunshine and high temperatures (ideally below 35°C).

Clean and Contamination-Free: To avoid cross-reactions, stay away from acidic gases, moisture sources (such water pipes and steam equipment), and other chemicals.

To guaranty stable storage conditions, an electronic thermometer and hygrometer can be installed in the warehouse for real-time monitoring.

 

2. Measures for Packaging and Sealing

Double-layer sealed packaging: The exterior layer is sealed with a moisture-proof woven bag, while the inner layer employs a polyethylene plastic film bag that is tightly sealed after air is released.

High-purity/active magnesium oxide can benefit from inert gas purging, which involves filling the packaging bag with nitrogen gas to further separate it from moisture and oxygen.

Sealing management: To prevent extended exposure to air, reseal right away after usage using clamps or a heat sealer.

For improved moisture protection and ease of reuse, aluminium foil bags with self-sealing strips are advised.

 

3. Inventory control and stacking

To avoid moisture conduction from the ground, store pallets at least 10 cm above the ground and at least 30 cm away from walls.

First-in, first-out (FIFO) principle: To prevent long-term accumulation that causes activity to naturally deteriorate, use in accordance with the order of reception.

Store separately: Avoid storing chemicals alongside other substances, particularly acids and chlorides.

For added protection, desiccant packets can be positioned around a plastic sheet or moisture-proof mat at the base of the stack.

 

 

4. Suggestions for Storage Duration

Regular magnesium oxide: Use it within six months;

The best time to use high-purity/active magnesium oxide is within three months. It will gradually change into Mg(OH)₂ after prolonged storage, which will lower its activity.

To guaranty consistent quality during long-term storage, it is advised to monitor the moisture content every 30 days.
