The 48V Revolution in Mobile and Off-Highway Equipment

The loud noise of a huge excavator or the quiet hum of an electric delivery van-these two types of vehicles have something in common: they all use 48V electrical architecture. The need for 48V single head electric heating elements has grown as the transportation and off-highway industries switch to electric power. These are not the same glow plugs that your grandfather used; they are advanced thermal devices built into the engines of current cars.
The rules about emissions are getting much stricter for commercial cars that run on diesel. Exhaust aftertreatment systems must attain their operational temperature within seconds of a cold start in order to meet these regulations. The 48V cartridge heater is quite important here. For instance, Eaton's eHeater is a 48V programmable controller that powers a heating element in the diesel exhaust catalyst. This quickly raises the temperature of the catalyst to lower dangerous NOx emissions. This application needs a single head heating element that can handle a lot of vibration and thermal shock while giving off precise, controlled power.
In addition to controlling pollutants, 48V systems are also used to maintain the temperature of batteries in electric and hybrid cars. Lithium-ion batteries work best when the temperature is just right. In cold conditions, a 48V cartridge heater built inside a cooling plate or submerged in a dielectric fluid can warm up the battery pack before charging. This protects the cells from damage and makes sure they work at their best. The low voltage is safe in the high-voltage environment of an EV, which makes it easier to monitor isolation.
For practical purposes, 48V single-end heating elements are used in off-highway equipment including agricultural tractors and construction machinery. They heat hydraulic oil to make it less viscous for cold starts, warm operator cab floors, or keep diesel fuel from gelling in cold weather. The larger resistance wire in a 48V cartridge heater makes it strong enough to handle heavy currents, which makes it a good fit for mobile equipment that vibrates and shakes.
When designing for mobile apps, there are some things that are different. The cartridge heater needs to be tough enough to handle salt spray, dirt, and pressure washing. It should also have potted or sealed ends. The leads need to be able to bend and not get damaged easily. They are usually protected by heavy-duty conduit or stainless steel braid. To stop fatigue failure from frequent movement, the resistance wire must be properly held in place by the MgO insulation -5-8.
As car platforms move toward 48V as the usual auxiliary voltage, the single head heater is becoming a part of the vehicle itself, not just an extra part. This technology is so flexible and tough that it can work just as well under the hood as it does in a precision mold.
