Three key points of electrical connection for electric heating tape

Improper electrical connections in heating cables can easily lead to problems such as poor contact and burnt joints, resulting not only in uneven heating and insulation failure but also the risk of electrical leakage. By focusing on three core points-"core wire connection, sealing protection, and proper grounding"-connection safety can be ensured, allowing the heating system to operate stably.

I. Precise Core Wire Connection to Prevent Poor Contact

Core wire connection is the foundation of electrical connections and must be ensured to be tight and free of gaps. First, when stripping the outer sheath of the heating cable and power cord, use dedicated wire strippers to avoid damaging the copper core. Second, following the "matching color" principle, align the heating core wire with the power cord core wire and crimp them securely with crimping pliers, or use welding (the weld joint must be smooth and burr-free). Finally, wrap 3-5 layers of insulating tape to ensure no exposed core wire. In one workshop, a loose core wire connection caused the joint to overheat to 120℃ during operation; after re-crimping, the temperature returned to normal, and the uneven heating problem did not recur.

II. Proper Sealing and Protection to Prevent Short Circuits and Leakage

Joints are weak points in waterproofing and moisture protection, and must be properly sealed. For outdoor or humid environments, the connected joints must be installed in a waterproof junction box, filled with waterproof sealant, and the box cover tightened to seal. The terminal end caps must be of the appropriate model, fitted onto the heat tracing end, and then fixed with a heat gun to prevent rainwater infiltration. In one residential area, outdoor heat tracing experienced short circuits and tripping during the rainy season due to poorly sealed joints. Replacing the waterproof junction box and ensuring proper sealing completely resolved the problem. Furthermore, damaged insulation can directly lead to leakage. Before connecting, the heat tracing outer sheath must be checked for integrity; if damaged, it must be cut and reconnected.

III. Proper Grounding Operation to Build a Safety Barrier

Grounding is crucial for preventing leakage accidents and must be reliable. The metal braided layer of the heat tracing cable and the outer shell of the waterproof junction box must be connected to the grounding electrode with a grounding wire, and the grounding resistance must be ≤4Ω. Simultaneously, a residual current device (RCD) (leakage current ≤30mA) should be installed in the circuit to quickly disconnect power in the event of a leakage. A factory's improper grounding caused a leak in the heat tracing insulation layer. Fortunately, the residual current device (RCD) tripped in time, preventing electric shock. After grounding is completed, the insulation resistance must be tested with a megohmmeter to ensure it is ≥20MΩ for it to be considered合格 (qualified).

For electrical connections of electric heat tracing cables, focusing on three key points-precise core wire connection, proper sealing and protection, and standardized grounding-can prevent problems such as poor contact, short circuits, and leaks. Ensuring safe connections ensures stable operation of the heat tracing system, avoids potential malfunctions, and makes the operation clear and easy to implement.
