Two-way junction box: a key component of electric heating tape

When installing electric heating tape, the junction box is a crucial component connecting the two sections of the heating tape. Many people experience problems such as poor contact, water ingress, and electrical leakage due to improper installation, sometimes even requiring rework. However, by mastering the correct method and following the "3-step connection + waterproof sealing" procedure, safety can be ensured, avoiding repeated modifications.

Step 1: Stripping and Cleaning, Preparing for Wiring. First, disconnect the power supply. Use professional wire strippers to remove the outer sheath of both heating tape sections, exposing 3-5cm of the core wire (avoid damaging the copper wires). Then, use sandpaper to smooth the oxide layer on the core wire surface to ensure good conductivity. One user failed to smooth the oxidized core wire, resulting in uneven heating after wiring. Upon disassembly, it was found that the core wire contact points were oxidized and blackened; resanding restored normal operation. Simultaneously, clean dust and debris from inside the junction box and check the sealing ring for damage, ensuring the seal is intact to prevent impurities from affecting the sealing effect.

Step 2: Proper Wiring, Ensuring a Secure and Loose Connection. Insert the two sections of the heat tracing wire into the two terminals of the junction box, and tighten the screws clockwise with a screwdriver, ensuring the wires are secure (you can test this by gently pulling on the wires). Ensure the positive and negative terminals are aligned (heat tracing devices without polarity can be connected arbitrarily). If the wire is too thin, wrap it 2-3 times before inserting it into the terminal to prevent poor contact. At one construction site, a worker didn't tighten the screws properly during wiring; after one month of operation, the connector became loose and overheated, almost causing a short circuit. Tightening the screws eliminated the potential hazard.


Step 3: Waterproof sealing to prevent moisture and leakage. This is the most crucial step, directly related to safety: First, wrap 2-3 turns of waterproof tape around the junction box interface, then tighten the box cover, ensuring the sealing ring completely fits the box body without gaps. Finally, wrap another turn of waterproof tape around the outer seam of the box body for double protection. When installing outdoors or in damp environments, a waterproof protective sleeve can also be placed over the junction box. A user only fastened the junction box cover without applying waterproof tape, allowing rainwater to seep in, causing a short circuit and tripping the circuit breaker. It only worked normally after being resealed.

Two-way junction boxes must be tested after installation to avoid potential hazards. After wiring, first use a multimeter to check continuity, confirming the circuit is unobstructed and there are no short circuits; then use a megohmmeter to test the insulation resistance; a value ≥20MΩ is acceptable. After a 10-minute power-on test, if the junction box is not hot to the touch and emits no odor, the installation is correct. A factory installed the junction box without testing and put it into use directly. Due to a short circuit caused by damaged core wires, the tracing cable burned out, requiring rework, which not only delayed production but also increased costs.

Avoid common mistakes for safer and less troublesome installations. First, do not use ordinary tape instead of waterproof tape; ordinary tape is prone to aging and cracking, rendering it ineffective at waterproofing. Second, do not cut the core wires when stripping them, as this will reduce conductivity and may even cause overheating. Third, never connect wires while the circuit is energized; always disconnect the power first to prevent electric shock.

For the two-way junction box used to install electric heating tape, follow these three steps: "stripping and cleaning the wires, standardizing the wiring, and sealing for waterproofing." Afterward, conduct a post-installation inspection and avoid common mistakes to ensure secure wiring and waterproofing. This will prevent repeated modifications, avoid potential hazards such as electrical leakage, and ensure stable operation of the heating system.
