What is an Immersion Heater? A Practical Guide for Importers and Distributors

An immersion heater is quite simply one of the most straightforward, reliable, and widely-used industrial heating solutions in the world.

It is essentially an electric heating element that is designed to be directly immersed into the liquid (or occasionally gas) that needs to be heated. Think of it as a very powerful, industrial-grade version of the electric kettle coil, but built to handle much tougher working conditions, larger volumes, and often continuous operation for months or even years.

Basic Structure – What You're Actually Buying

Most immersion heaters share these core components:

Key Points Importers Usually Care About (and What Buyers Ask Most)

Watt density (W/cm² or W/in²) – this is the single most important technical parameter that determines heater life

Water → 8–12 W/cm² is safe

Light oil → 3–6 W/cm²

Heavy oil/bitumen → 1.0–2.5 W/cm²

Very viscous/sticky media → even lower (sometimes 0.8 W/cm²)

Sheath material selection – wrong material = customer will get heater failure in weeks/months Common mistake: using SS304 for mildly acidic solutions → fast corrosion

Thermostat vs No thermostat Many small & medium buyers still want built-in adjustable thermostat (30–120°C most common). Large projects usually want only heater + separate control panel.

Explosion-proof certification If the customer mentions "Zone 1", "Zone 2", "ATEX", "IECEx", "Class I Div 1" – price can easily jump 2.5–4×

Cold end length / hot zone position Buyers frequently forget to tell you how deep the liquid level is. Wrong cold zone length = burned out heater + angry customer.

Quick Buying Decision Tree (real-world experience)

Is the liquid water or very dilute aqueous solution? → SS304/316 + 8–11 W/cm² is usually safe & economical

Is there any acid, chloride, or high temperature (>80°C)? → Jump to Incoloy 800/825 or Titanium

Viscosity > 100 cP or heavy oil/fuel oil? → Low watt density (≤3 W/cm²) + Incoloy preferred

Solvent, strong acid, or very corrosive chemical? → Titanium / PTFE / Quartz / Hastelloy (prepare for high price)

Need to install without emptying the tank? → Over-the-side style or circulation heater

In short: immersion heater looks simple, but the combination of material + watt density + mounting + control method makes huge difference in real field performance and customer satisfaction.

When you're quoting or sourcing, always ask at least these five questions:

What exact liquid? (chemical name + concentration if possible)

Working temperature & max temperature?

Tank size & liquid depth?

Power supply (voltage + phase)?

Any special requirement (explosion-proof, food grade, low watt density, etc.)?

Get these five answers right → the rest is usually standard.
