What Is the Influence of Thermocouple Installation Depth on Hot Runner Temperature Control

What Is the Influence of Thermocouple Installation Depth on Hot Runner Temperature ControlOne of the most important construction factors for hot runner thermocouples is installation depth, which directly determines heat conduction efficiency, temperature sampling accuracy, and real-time feedback speed. It also has an impact on the system's overall zoning temperature balance. Unreasonable insertion depth during actual assembly is the primary cause of many on-site temperature control errors rather than subpar thermocouple quality.

The sensing probe cannot access the core high-temperature heating region of manifolds and nozzles if the insertion depth is too shallow. The recorded temperature value is clearly lower than the actual melt working temperature inside the runner because it remains in the low-temperature transition layer far from the melt flow channel. In order to compensate, the temperature controller would continuously raise the heating power, which will cause the internal plastic melt to overheat invisibly. This can quickly lead to material degradation, carbon deposition, and surface discolouration flaws. In the meantime, shallow placement fails to achieve timely temperature adjustment during injection molding process changes, resulting in delayed temperature response and significant hysteresis.

Conversely, if the insertion depth is too great, the probe will come into direct contact with the central high-heat source or internal heating devices. The temperature data that was gathered is significantly greater than the melt flow channel's real ambient temperature. Inadequate overall melt temperature, poor fluidity, and common molding flaws including weld lines, sink marks, and incomplete filling will occur from the control system inadvertently cutting off heating output beforehand. Furthermore, excessively deep probes might cause extrusion deformation inside small holes, which can harm internal thermoelectric core wires and drastically reduce service life.

Nozzle thermocouples must be fitted near the front heating section while avoiding direct contact with heating wires, and manifold thermocouples must be inserted to two-thirds of the entire depth of reserved holes in compliance with industry uniform installation requirements. Operators must perform infrared temperature comparison calibration after fixed installation in order to accurately adjust the depth. Adhering strictly to the specified insertion depth can guaranty that the thermocouple records the most accurate and useful working temperature, provide a strong basis for accurate consistent temperature management, and successfully lessen a variety of quality abnormalities brought on by temperature misjudgment.
