How to Maintain Hot Runner Thermocouples During Long-term Production Shutdown

Idle hot runner thermocouples are susceptible to hidden aging and damage from prolonged production shutdowns such as holiday rest, order suspension, and mold storage. Performance deterioration, signal failure, and oxidation corrosion can all be successfully prevented with scientifically standardized idle maintenance, which also guaranties that they can return to regular usage as soon as production resumes.

Implement graded cooling and power-off specifications first. Cutting off the power supply immediately after manufacturing has stopped is absolutely prohibited. In order to fully discharge any remaining high-temperature heat inside components, operators should first gradually lower the set temperature of hot runner manifolds and nozzles, lower the overall temperature to below 120°C, maintain constant temperature heat preservation for two to three hours, and then completely cut off the power supply. The interior alloy wires of thermocouples will undergo extreme thermal shrinkage due to sudden chilling, which can easily cause internal fracture and unseen damage.

Second, make sure everything is clean and sealed. Prior to long-term storage, disassemble each key nozzle and manifold thermocouple individually, use soft cleaning tools to thoroughly remove oxide filth, plastic residue, and surface carbon deposits, and inspect the probes for wear, corrosion, or deformation. To separate the probe surface from corrosive gas and air moisture, apply a thin coating of high-temperature anti-rust protective oil after cleaning and drying. To stop dust, moisture, and other debris from entering and creating an internal damp short circuit, cover any unused thermocouple mounting holes and wiring ports with appropriate sealing plugs.

Thirdly, standardize the categorization of storage environments. Thermocouples assembled on idle molds and detached spare thermocouples must be stored in dry, ventilated, and constant-temperature warehouses away from regions with high vibration, humidity, and volatile chemicals. In order to prevent wire extrusion and probe bending damage, classify and mark them based on their model, specifications, and corresponding hot runner brand. During the idle period, check the storage condition every six months to get rid of damp and mildew hazards before they become serious.

Complete full-line inspection and preheating debugging consistently before resuming production following shutdown. First, make sure the wiring is firm and the signal is continuous. Next, use a slow segmented heating mode to gradually return the working temperature. Finally, calibrate the temperature data once more. Perfect idle maintenance can maximize thermocouple performance retention, significantly lower the failure rate after production resumes, and save a significant amount of money on troubleshooting and replacement accessories.
