What Is the Role of PTFE Heaters in Black Oxide Coating Processes for Steel?

Black oxide coating gives a stylish black surface and mild corrosion protection for steel products. The technique is to immerse in a boiling solution of caustic soda and oxidising salts at temperatures from 140 to 150 degrees centigrade. This intense atmosphere requires unique materials for the heater.

Black Oxide Coating Process
Black oxide coating is commonly put on steel parts to make them look better and give them a little corrosion resistance. This is achieved by immersing the steel in a concentrated bath of sodium hydroxide, nitrates and nitrites, a caustic solution that boils at around 140-150°C (285-300°F). The oxidising salts react with the surface of the steel, producing a thin, black oxide coating.

The high working temperature and harsh chemical composition of the bath require heaters that can survive both the high temperature and corrosive environment. Heaters used in black oxide coating applications must be able to withstand continuous exposure to this boiling caustic solution while delivering homogeneous heat distribution.

The Heater Challenge with Black Oxide Finish
Traditional PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) heaters are widely utilised in many industrial heating applications, because of their superior chemical resistance. But normal PTFE is not suited for the black oxide coating process due to its maximum continuous service temperature of 110°C. Standard PTFE is not suitable for these high temperature applications as black oxide coating requires a temperature range of 140-150°C.

Another option is the use of specific high temperature fluoropolymer blends or PFA (perfluoroalkoxy) which can tolerate the high temperatures required for black oxide procedures. In particular PFA has a maximum continuous service temperature of about 260 °C and is therefore well suited to the black oxide coating process. Some manufacturers produce immersion heaters with PFA sheaths dedicated to this purpose providing a corrosion resistant and reliable heating solution.

Alternate: Sheathed Metal Heaters
Traditionally, the approach has been to employ metal clad heaters (e.g. stainless steel or Incoloy) to heat black oxide baths. The heaters can tolerate the high temperatures of the process, but have limited service life because of the strong attack of the caustic solution. Over time the metal sheath can corrode causing failure of the heating element and pollution of the bath.

PFA-sheathed heaters, on the other hand, are a more robust option with better corrosion resistance and a longer service life than metal heaters. These PFA heaters can maintain the high temperatures required without deteriorating or leaking pollutants into the solution, hence maintaining the quality of the black oxide coating process.

Material Selection: PTFE, PFA or Metal Sheathed Heaters
Material Max. Continuous TemperatureCorrosion Resistance Durability Suitability for Black Oxide
PTFE Standard 110°C (230°F)Very good in non-alkaline environmentLimited service life at high temperature Not appropriate for black oxide, temperature is higher than its limit PFA 260°C (500°F) Exceptional in alkaline and corrosive solutions Long longevity, low deteriorationWell suited for black oxide coating applications
Metal Sheathed (Stainless Steel/Incoloy) 1200°C+ (2200°F+)Resistance to corrosion in alkaline conditionsShort lifespan owing to caustic attack Suitable, but with limited lifespan due to risk of corrosion
Summary of the news
Black oxide coatings demand high temperatures that traditional PTFE heaters cannot withstand. PFA and other modern fluoropolymers provide a high-temperature, corrosion-resistant alternative. These PFA-sheathed heaters are chemically resistant and durable for reliable operation in black oxide coating processes and they last longer than standard metal heaters. In high temperature corrosive situations, it is important to understand material temperature limits and pick the right heater material for safe and efficient operation.
