What is the typical lifespan of a furnace temperature sensor?

Depending on usage frequency, operating temperature, environmental factors, and degree of maintenance, a furnace temperature sensor can last anywhere from one to three years.

1. Important Lifespan Factors

A factor

An explanation

Frequency of Use

A lifespan of one year may be shortened by high-load situations with more than three furnace cycles per day.

Maximum Temperature of Operation

Thermocouple oxidation is accelerated by prolonged operation above 600°C, which drastically shortens their lifespan.

Cycles of Heat

Because of thermal expansion and contraction, frequent temperature changes raise the possibility of loose wire or fractured protective tubes.

Environmental Sanitation

The sensor surface may be harmed by dust, carbon accumulation, or corrosive gasses inside the furnace.

Level of Maintenance

The lifespan of wiring terminals can be increased to more than three years with routine calibration and cleaning.

Practical Case: An average lifespan of 2.8 years was attained for K-type thermocouples in a factory that operated at 580°C with an average of two furnace cycles per day and quarterly calibration.

2. Alerts Prior to Lifespan Expiration:

The temperature measurement leaps or drifts, with a variance greater than ±5°C;

The temperature increase curve lags, and response speed considerably slows;

In a multi-point temperature measurement, a point either exhibits no signal or constantly stays low;

The millivolt value of the multimeter output deviates from the calibration table (for example, 580°C is equivalent to 14.2mV).

Note: To determine whether a replacement is required, compare any of these indications right away with a conventional thermocouple.

3. Maintenance Suggestions to Increase Lifespan:

Check the wiring connections for oxidation after every furnace shutdown, clean them right away, and apply anti-oxidant grease;

Steer clear of mechanical impact; handle carefully when replacing to keep the protective tube from breaking;

Install properly, avoiding direct flame jet, and making sure the thermocouple insertion depth is enough (typically ≥150mm);

To identify early degradation, use TUS testing to assess performance on a regular basis.
