Why did the heating element trip the circuit breaker?

If the circuit breaker trips during the use of the heating element, it's usually due to poor wiring or a short circuit.

First, when the circuit breaker trips during heating element operation, we should check if the residual current device (RCD) is malfunctioning. If the RCD is fine, then we should check the heating element itself. We need to troubleshoot which part of the heating element is causing the short circuit.

There are many reasons for short circuits in heating elements. Here are some common causes:

1. Heating element wire diameter too small or loose connections/poor contact

If the heating element's connecting wire diameter is too small, it will trip after a short period of heating. Loose connections/poor contact can also occur. During use, if the heating element wire is subjected to excessive pulling force or impact, or if the wire at the outlet is frequently bent, it may cause poor contact at the connection point, which easily leads to a short circuit and tripping.

2. Poor insulation of the heating element causing leakage

When the insulation of the heating element is poor, the heating wire inside the heating element and the stainless steel outer shell may break down, causing leakage.

Inferior internal insulation material of the heating element; off-center heating wire during manufacturing; when the wire is too close to the metal outer wall, it is easily broken down by current, leading to leakage. Prolonged storage in high humidity conditions allows moisture to enter the heating element, reducing its insulation performance and causing tripping after power is applied.

**Caution!** A humid environment can easily cause leakage, but this is not due to the heating element itself. Storage and use in humid environments easily cause moisture to accumulate inside the heating element, leading to a decrease in the insulation performance of even a qualified heating element. This is normal; a damp heating element can be slowly expelled by baking or starting with low voltage, and its insulation performance will be restored.

3. Use of Electric Heating Element in a Vacuum Environment

When using an electric heating element in a vacuum environment, do not design the wiring of the heating element in a vacuum environment. Because a vacuum environment and the vacuuming process can reduce the creepage distance between electrodes in certain situations, a heating element that will not leak in air may leak in a vacuum environment. Therefore, do not design the wiring of the heating element in a vacuum environment.

4. Tripping due to age and product aging

Heating elements that have been used for a long time (replaceable annually according to national electrical standards) may experience problems due to environmental factors (such as prolonged high temperatures, frequent activity, or external impacts). These problems can include oxidation of the internal heating wire, carbonization of the silicone layer in the wires, and aging of the wire insulation, leading to leakage.

The above are some common phenomena that cause heating element tripping. You can check these phenomena when you encounter them. When using electric heating elements, you should also pay attention to their condition and replace them with high-quality heating elements when you notice a decrease in performance or material aging.
