In recent years, energy companies in the Middle East have been actively developing solar energy by utilizing sufficient local solar resources. According to the latest report from the Middle East Solar Industry Association (MESIA), the Middle East will purchase more than 4GW of solar power generation. The photovoltaic market in the Middle East and Africa is expected to grow to 9GW.
In 2016, the Middle East and North Africa market is expected to purchase 2GW from Algeria, 1150MW from the United Arab Emirates (800MW from Dubai, 350MW from Abu Dhabi), 250MW from Egypt, and 245MW from Morocco. Jordan (120MW), Kuwait (85MW), and even Saudi Arabia (170MW).
The 2016 MESIA market outlook predicts that GCC countries will need an additional 1 billion megawatts of electricity demand in 2016, with a total investment of 155 billion US dollars in solar power generation equipment. By 2020, there will be 20 large-scale energy projects with a total investment of $300 billion.
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena), there are currently 30 renewable energy projects under planning, under construction, or completed in the GCC. It is expected that the adoption of renewable energy in GCC countries will save $200 billion by 2030.
Dubai itself does not have natural gas storage for its power generation and relies entirely on imports; It is urgent to develop and utilize other energy sources and plan for their long-term energy reserves. Dubai's electricity demand is growing at an average annual rate of 8%. With the arrival of the 2020 Dubai World Expo, it will respond to the demand of hundreds of millions of tourists from around the world.
In 2012, Dubai launched the Maktoum Solar Park Plan, which is expected to have a power generation capacity of 1GW by 2030, making it one of the larger solar parks in the region. The first phase of the project was completed in the third quarter of 2013, with a power generation capacity of 13MW. It is also reported that in 2020, the power consumption of the United Arab Emirates will double from the current 87 megawatt hours (TWH) to 180 megawatt hours, with an annual growth rate of 8.5%; In view of this, the UAE government plans to invest $25 billion in the power sector in the next eight years to meet the growing demand for electricity. By 2030, a total of 30 billion dirhams (approximately US $8.17 billion) will be invested to build a 3000 megawatt power generation capacity. In 2020 and 2030, solar power will account for 7% and 15% of Dubai's electricity generation, respectively.
