Sri Lanka, a tropical island country with the reputation of "the pearl of the Indian Ocean", covers an area of 65610 square kilometers, has a population of 20.48 million (2012), has a beautiful seashore, mysterious ancient city, rich natural heritage, and unique and charming culture. Sri Lanka has four seasons like summer, no distinction between the four seasons, only the rainy season and the dry season. It is a tourist resort resort and a place more beautiful than Maldives!
In April this year, the Prime Ministers of China and Sri Lanka held talks in Beijing and jointly expressed their desire to further accelerate the negotiations on the free trade zone and strive for results within the year.
China and Sri Lanka are traditional friendly neighbors. In recent years, with the promotion of the two governments and the unremitting efforts of both enterprises, bilateral economic and trade cooperation has developed rapidly and achieved remarkable results. Projects in the fields of transportation, energy, water conservancy and telecommunications undertaken by Chinese enterprises play an important role in the economic and social development of Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan government is committed to attracting foreign investment, improving infrastructure conditions and developing tourism, medicine, agriculture and other key industries. The two sides have great potential to strengthen investment cooperation in these areas and broad prospects.
Sri Lanka's industrial base is relatively weak. Due to the lack of resources, a large number of industrial raw materials still need to be imported from abroad. Sri Lanka's capital-and technology-intensive industry has not yet formed, and there is almost no heavy industry.
In recent years, mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries in various fields has been expanding, and bilateral trade has maintained a rapid growth momentum. According to the statistics of China Customs, the total bilateral trade between China and Sri Lanka in 2014 was 4.042 billion US dollars, of which China exported 3.793 billion US dollars to Sri Lanka and China imported 249 million US dollars from Sri Lanka, up 11.66%, 10.35% and 36.24% respectively year on year.
Over the past year, Chinese enterprises have made leapfrog development in their investment in Sri Lanka, and many large investment projects have been signed. China's investment projects in Sri Lanka mainly include the Colombo Port South Container Terminal invested by China Merchants Group, the Colombo Port City invested by China Communications Construction Group Co., Ltd., and the Colombo three-zone apartment invested by AVIC International (Hong Kong) Group. The investment of Chinese private enterprises in Sri Lanka has developed rapidly, involving hotels, tourism, agricultural products processing, fisheries, furniture manufacturing, textiles, feed, biomass power generation, bicycles, warehousing and logistics and other fields.
