Is there a way to restore the color of color-changing silica gel?

Yes, you may recover the colour of the colour changing silica gel. The best technique is to heat it and dry it to remove the absorbed water, so that the indicator returns to the dry state and the colour is restored correspondingly.

1.The main method of colour restoration is heating regeneration. The colour shift of color-changing silica gel is due to the reaction of its internal cobalt chloride (CoCl2) or ecologically friendly indicator to humidity. When it no longer absorbs moisture, the moisture can be driven out by heat and the colour restored:

(1) Oven drying method (recommended)

Temperature : 100-120 °C

Duration: 1-2 hours

Operation:

Remove the plastic container (this stops it melting in high heat);

Place on a heat resistant tray, no thicker than 5cm;

Put it in the warm oven and watch the colour change;

When particles are red (or green) fully, remove them, cool naturally and seal for storage.

It is often used in laboratories and industry because it produces homogeneous heat and stable results. (2) Microwave heating method (emergency rapid drying)

Power: Mean power (about 600W)

Time: Heat for 1-2 minutes at a time, stirring after each heating. Total time should not exceed 5 minutes.

Container: Glass or ceramic dishes. The packaging material is not suitable for heating.

NOTE This technique may cause localised overheating and shattering of the particles. It is only suitable for small scale temporary treatment.

(3) Sunlight Exposure Method (Auxiliary Method)

It cannot be fully dehydrated. It can be treated by putting it under the sun for 8-12 hours on a sunny day.

Suitable for light moisture absorption; further high-temperature drying still needed for full restoration.

2. Criteria for Returning Colour

Type

Drying Condition Colour

Colour Expired

Restoration Mark

Silica Gel Blue

Dark Blue

Pink / Red

Particles go back to complete uniform dark blue

Silica Gel Orange

Lime Green/ Bright Orange

Deep Green

Back orange, no green spots

If the colour is grayish-white, dark red or can not be restored by heating, it means ageing or injury and the regeneration is tough.

3. Tips to Increase Recovery Success Rate

Temperature control: not more than 120℃, else cobalt chloride will be oxidised and lose activity;

Prompt Processing: Rebuild at the rate of 1/3 of the discolouration to prevent extensive moisture absorption;

Uniform Heating: Spread out in a single layer and don't stack, as this may affect heat conduction;

Sealing After Cooling: Leave to cool naturally in an oven with power off for 30-60 minutes to avoid subsequent moisture absorption.

Practical Suggestion 2: Display 'Number of Regenerations' on box. Use with caution after 5+ regenerations.
