Safety protection of electric heat tracing systems during thunderstorms

Thunderstorms and strong lightning strikes can easily damage electric heat tracing systems, causing electrical leaks, electric shocks, and other safety accidents. This not only burns out equipment and affects its use but can also endanger personnel safety. Mastering core precautions such as lightning protection grounding and power outage protection, and following standardized operating procedures, are essential to avoid risks and ensure the safe operation of the system.

Proper lightning protection grounding is crucial to resist lightning strikes. Lightning induction can easily break down the insulation layer of electric heat tracing systems, causing short circuits and burnout. Outdoor or open-air heat tracing systems must be equipped with surge protectors (SPDs), with the model matching the system voltage (typically Type 2 SPDs are suitable for 220V). The heat tracing metal braid layer and the junction box casing must be reliably grounded, with a grounding resistance ≤4Ω, forming a lightning protection loop. In one factory, outdoor pipeline heat tracing without SPDs was struck by lightning; the heat tracing core wire burned out, and the pipeline froze and blocked. After installing lightning protection devices, the failure did not recur.

Disconnect power promptly before lightning strikes to eliminate the risk of live wires. Thirty minutes before a thunderstorm, the main power supply and branch circuit switches for the electric heat tracing system must be turned off, and the thermostat plugged in to prevent induced high voltage from lightning strikes. If power cannot be cut off in time, remote control must be used to disconnect the power. Manual operation of the heat tracing system during thunderstorms is strictly prohibited. In one residential area, residents did not turn off the power during a thunderstorm, and lightning flowed through the lines into the heat tracing system, causing a leak in the junction box and nearly resulting in an electric shock.

Check the protective seals to prevent rainwater infiltration. Thunderstorms are often accompanied by heavy rain, so the sealing of the heat tracing junction boxes and terminal caps must be checked in advance to ensure that waterproof tape is tightly wrapped, junction box covers are tightened, and the waterproof rating is IP65 or higher. If the outdoor heat tracing outer protective pipe is damaged, repair it immediately with waterproof tape to prevent rainwater from seeping in and causing a short circuit. In a chemical industrial park, the seals of the heat tracing junction boxes were aging, and water entered during a thunderstorm, causing a short circuit and burning out the controller. After replacing the sealing components, the system returned to normal.

Regular inspection and maintenance are essential to identify and eliminate hidden dangers. Before the rainy season, use a megohmmeter to test the insulation resistance of the heat tracing (≥20MΩ is acceptable), and use a multimeter to check the continuity of the circuit; check the lightning protection device for integrity, and whether the grounding lead is loose or corroded. After the rainy season, test the insulation performance again before powering on, and only switch on after confirming there are no abnormalities. A farm failed to conduct pre-season testing; after the rainy season, the insulation resistance of the heat tracing dropped to 5MΩ. Power was turned on without investigation, resulting in equipment burnout.

Standardize personnel operations and ensure safety precautions. During rainy weather, it is strictly forbidden to approach the heat tracing junction box, control cabinet, etc. Repairs or inspections must be carried out after power is off, and insulated gloves and shoes must be worn. It is strictly forbidden to disassemble heat tracing equipment privately during rainy weather. If emergency repairs are needed, wait until the rainy season ends to ensure a safe environment. A maintenance worker violated regulations during a rainy season, touching a live junction box and suffering an electric shock.

Safety precautions for electric heat tracing systems during thunderstorms include ensuring proper lightning protection grounding, cutting off power before lightning strikes, checking seals, regular inspection and maintenance, and standardized personnel operation. These measures effectively mitigate the risks of lightning strikes and electrical leakage, eliminating concerns about equipment damage and personnel safety, ensuring stable system operation, and providing peace of mind and reliability.
