What Are the Differences Between K-type and J-type Hot Runner Thermocouples

The two most popular base metal thermocouples in the hot runner industry are K-type and J-type. Because of their differences in temperature resistance range, measuring accuracy, material composition, environmental adaptability, and application scope, users must carefully choose them based on the actual molding working conditions.

The most popular option for hot runners in terms of temperature resistance range is K-type thermocouples, which have a normal operating temperature range of 0°C to 1200°C and long-term stable use within 180°C to 350°C, covering all regular and high-temperature plastic molding periods. J-type thermocouples can't withstand long-term high-temperature baking of engineering plastic hot runners; their safe continuous operating temperature is below 750°C, and they can only be used in low and medium temperature environments below 260°C.

When it comes to temperature measuring performance, K-type products can keep steady detection data even after months of continuous production because they have better long-term stability, lower thermal potential drift, and higher overall precision. J-type thermocouples respond to temperature more quickly at first, but they have poor high-temperature stability, can easily cause noticeable data drift after prolonged heating, and the error value rises quickly as the service duration is extended.

K-type nickel-chromium nickel-aluminum alloy materials are ideal for most modified plastics and filled plastic production environments due to their exceptional oxidation resistance and ability to withstand weak corrosive gas produced by plastic melting. J-type iron-constantan core wires have weak anti-corrosion performance, are easily oxidized and rust in hot, humid environments, and are only appropriate for the manufacturing of pure raw materials without additives.

K-type thermocouples are universally matched with all popular brands of hot runner systems in actual hot runner matching applications. This includes straightforward procurement and replacement, as well as comprehensive supporting wires and controllers. J-type thermocouples are rarely found in high-standard industrial hot runner systems; instead, they are mostly utilized in low-temperature ordinary cold runner molds and basic low-temperature heating equipment. In conclusion, K-type thermocouples with a broad temperature range and reliable performance are preferred for hot runner professional temperature measurement, but J-type thermocouples are only suitable for low-temperature, low-demand auxiliary temperature detection situations.
