What Is Service Life Standard of Hot Runner Thermocouples

The temperature measurement accuracy of hot runner thermocouples, which are easy-wear vulnerable accessories in temperature control systems, will gradually deteriorate until total failure due to high temperatures, frequent vibration, the impact of thermal cycles, and raw material corrosive gas erosion. Clear service life judgment guidelines can assist businesses in planning replacement plans ahead of time and preventing abrupt production halts brought on by thermocouple deterioration.

Conventional K-type hot runner thermocouples have a theoretical continuous service life of eight thousand to twelve thousand production hours under normal excellent use conditions and standardized operation management. Thermocouples can fully fulfill daily stable production demand during this service life cycle while maintaining temperature measurement error within a specified range, stable signal transmission, and no visible aging phenomena. The majority of qualifying brand thermocouples can reach or even beyond the typical service life for workshop production lines with steady temperature settings, a clean production environment, and routine maintenance.

The actual service life of thermocouples will be significantly reduced in challenging working conditions. The oxidation and aging speed of thermocouple internal core wires will be accelerated by long-term operation in extremely high temperatures above 380 degrees Celsius, frequent temperature changes, processing glass fiber-filled modified plastics and corrosive, easily decomposed raw materials, and early drift of temperature measurement data. The actual usable service life may be reduced to 3,000 to 5,000 hours. Additionally, improper installation techniques, excessive extrusion deformation, and erratic plugging and pulling cabling will all directly lead to early thermocouple degradation and a failure to meet standard service life.

From the standpoint of use state judgment, thermocouples must be changed right away without postponing usage if they exhibit any of the following failure signals, even if they are still within their theoretical service life. First, the temperature data display is disorganized, with abrupt jumps that are impossible to stabilize; second, even after multiple calibrations, the temperature measurement deviation still exceeds three degrees Celsius, making it impossible to meet production precision requirements; third, the external high-temperature wire skin is severely aged, cracked, and exposed inner wire; fourth, the sensing head is worn out, deformed, and unable to be closely fitted with the heating installation hole; and fifth, the temperature controller regularly sounds the thermocouple open circuit and short circuit fault alarm.

Businesses can set up a thermocouple use account management system, track installation time, usage hours, and replacement time for every batch of thermocouples, and implement unified batch replacement on a regular basis. After a year of continuous, long-term usage of molds, it is advised to replace all hot runner thermocouples on the entire machine in order to remove any potential hidden aging risks beforehand. In addition to maximizing the use value of thermocouples and controlling accessory procurement costs, a reasonable replacement cycle arrangement in accordance with service life standards can essentially prevent a variety of quality defects and production losses brought on by the failure of expired temperature measuring sensors.
